Albany State Olympian Alice Coachman Returns to Campus, Promotes New Book

Written by , Posted in Albany State University, Georgia, Sports

In 1948, Albany State University alumna Alice Coachman was the only African-American to win a gold medal for the United States in the London Olympic Games. On the eve of the Games’ return to London, Coachman has returned to ASU to promote her new children’s book Queen of the Track and to revisit her time as an international sports star.

In Coachman’s day, there were no black gold medalists to show her how to compete for the world’s most coveted sports prize; nor were there pioneers to emulate. The only equipment available to jumpstart what later became a storied athletic career were tied rags, ropes and sticks.

On day one of her campus photo shoot, wearing a blue and gold ASU tee shirt draped with a U.S.A. team jacket and cap, one of Albany State’s most celebrated alumna rode by golf cart to the entrance of the Student Center.
