Cheyney Gets Off to Hot Start, Holds Off Lincoln in “Battle of the First”

Written by , Posted in Cheyney University, Lincoln University (Pa.), Pennsylvania, Sports

In a mistake-filled game that clearly was the first of season for both teams, Cheyney University can lay claim to being the first and best HBCU of Pennsylvania for the second year in a row.

Led by a swarming defense and 207 yards of rushing on offense, the Wolverines spoiled Lincoln University’s first game at its new campus stadium with a 34-21 win Saturday afternoon in the annual “Battle of the first.”

“We were confident in what the coaches were going to do to get us in position,” said senior linebacker Thomas Stewart who recorded 6 solo tackles, 1 assisted tackle, a sack and an interception on a busy afternoon. “They put us in the position to make plays and that’s what we did.”

When States Disinvest in Higher Ed, the Poor Pay the Price

Written by , Posted in Cheyney University, Funding, Grambling State University

The Department of Education recently released its updated College Affordability and Transparency lists. Publication of the lists is mandated by the Higher Education Act, and is part of the federal government’s attempts at helping students and families better compare costs of different higher education providers.

A secondary purpose of the lists is to, in effect, praise (and promote) schools with low costs and low rates of inflation and shame schools with high costs and high inflation rates. Not only are the names of these schools publicized widely, but schools with the highest costs and inflation must submit a report to the Secretary of Education detailing the reasons for the increases and any cost-containment measures they plan to take. But in looking at the public schools on the lists, it is clear that the real shame should be directed at statehouses across the country.

Lincoln roars, beats Cheyney in “Battle of the Firsts”

Written by , Posted in Cheyney University, Lincoln University of Pennsylvania, Sports

The Cheyney University men’s basketball team showed a little rust in their season opening contest against arch rival Lincoln University inside Temple University’s Liacouras Center in Philadelphia Friday night.

With virtually an entirely new team, the Wolves fell to the Lions, 65-56, in the 21st annual “Battle of the Firsts” rivalry between the nation’s two oldest historically black universities. All-PSAC East selection Sharif Bray, along with David Burton, Bruce Kennedy and Rob Townsend, graduated, leaving few experienced players on the Wolves roster.

Seized Pot Growing Equipment Given To Cheyney

Written by , Posted in Cheyney University, Health

Equipment seized from a Philadelphia-area marijuana operation is going to be used to grow a different kind of herb — and vegetables, too.

Delaware County District Attorney G. Michael Green tells The Philadelphia Inquirer the equipment taken in May from a sophisticated marijuana growing operation will go to Cheyney University and a Philadelphia community development corporation’s Urban Food Lab.

Authorities say the raid at a former Chester drugstore yielded industrial generators, grow lights and hydroponic plant containers.

Cheyney Snaps Losing Streak Against Lincoln (Pa.)

Written by , Posted in Cheyney University, Lincoln University of Pennsylvania, Sports

It was the first collegiate coaching victory for interim head coach Ken Lockard. It was the first victory in the season opener for the Wolves since 2000 (32-22 over Glenville State). It was the first victory over Lincoln in ten tries as Cheyney claimed the Battle of the Firsts 21-19.

“I was proud of all the guys today,” stated Lockard. “We were pumped up right from the opening whistle which probably accounted for a bunch of penalties. However, no one let it get them down. We just kept on playing the specials really delivered as did the defense when the game was on the line.”

Cheyney Scholarship Programs Face Loss of State Funds

Written by , Posted in Cheyney University, Funding

Tucked away on Page 593, midway through Gov. Corbett’s budget proposal, are two lines that would mean little to most readers, but that could spell trouble for hundreds of students and graduates of Cheyney University.

The spending plan would eliminate all funding for the Cheyney Keystone Honors Academy and the Bond-Hill Scholarships, two student-aid programs that last year together received about $2.4 million.

Both were established as part of agreements in the 1980s and ’90s between the state and the federal Office for Civil Rights, in an effort to erase the vestiges of segregation by enhancing programs and educational opportunities at the university.
