Arrests Down at CIAA Tournament…Except for this Table Throwing Incident

Written by , Posted in CIAA Basketball Tournament, Crime, North Carolina, Sports

CIAA-Schedule-of-Events

Charlotte-Mecklenberg Police today released statistics showing a downward trend in arrests at this year’s CIAA Tournament when compared to last year’s numbers. 21 people were arrested over the course of the week, with most in connection to alcohol and fighting.

The department reported 31 arrests last year during CIAA tournament week. Official attendance numbers have not yet been released, but the tournament annually attracts more than 200,000 people to the Charlotte uptown area.

It’s a good bet that most of those arrests probably were made shortly after this video was shot.

Charlotte Must Become Better Partner to CIAA

Written by , Posted in CIAA, CIAA Basketball Tournament, Editorial

CIAA

The CIAA just completed another successful tournament run in Charlotte, sure to bring another February of multi-million dollar returns in revenues for the city, and economic stimulus to local businesses.

But in the throes of the most attended and popular college basketball tournament in the country, CIAA leadership all but threatened to take the tournament away from the city to remind every one of how one-sided the Charlotte-CIAA partnership has been over the course of seven years.

Will the CIAA Tournament Leave Charlotte?

Written by , Posted in CIAA, CIAA Basketball Tournament, Sports

CIAA

As the CIAA Tournament speeds towards the conclusion of its last games and associated day parties, CIAA Commissioner Jacqie Carpenter says that there is a real possibility that 2014 may be the last year of the tournament’s run in the Queen City. From the Charlotte Observer:

“We still haven’t been able to take care of our teams the way that I’d like to; they are spread out all over the city and I would like to figure out a way to get teams closer to the venue. That’s part of their experience as well,” Commissioner Jacque Carpenter said.

Cities will begin bidding for the tournament next month.

CIAA Commissioner Jacqie Carpenter on Federal Lawsuit Against Promoters, Vendors

Written by , Posted in CIAA, CIAA Basketball Tournament, Sports

“If somebody was attaching your name and not using it for things that are healthy for your family, what would you do?” Carpenter said last month at a press conference to unveil the league’s new seal and basketball tournament logo. “We have a brand that’s our family brand and if you want to use it, just go through the right process of using it. Don’t say you love the CIAA but don’t want to use it properly in the right form or the right way. It’s our job to protect our brand.”

Shaw Wins Second Straight CIAA Women’s Basketball Championship

Written by , Posted in CIAA Basketball Tournament, Headlines, Shaw University, Sports

Tournament MVP Aslea Williams scored 17 points as Shaw toppled Johnson C. Smith University 72-66 Saturday (March 3) in the CIAA championship game at Time Warner Cable Arena. The Lady Bears captured their second straight CIAA title and seventh in 10 seasons.

Kyria Buford added 11 points and Crystal Harris came off the bench to score 10 points for the Lady Bears (23-6 overall), who lost only one CIAA game this season. That defeat occurred at the hands of the Lady Golden Bulls as both teams split during the regular season. The Lady Bears own the Lady Golden Bulls during the postseason, however. They are 5-0 against the Lady Golden Bulls in the league title game since 2003.

“We expected to win,” Buford said afterward. “But we knew we couldn’t take them for granted. That’s what we did the first time against them.”

CIAA Basketball Tournament Brought Estimated 190,000 Fans, Economic Impact of $44 Million

Written by , Posted in CIAA Basketball Tournament, Headlines, Sports

The gridlocked streets, jammed sidewalks and packed bars and restaurants told the story last month. Now the numbers are out to prove it: More people than ever attended last month’s Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association basketball tournament.

In figures released to The Associated Press on Monday, the Charlotte Regional Visitors Authority estimates attendance for official CIAA functions topped 190,000 and provided an economic impact of $44.3 million, a 19 percent increase from last year. Both numbers are records for the tournament, which has been held in Charlotte since 2006.

The signature event of the NCAA Division II league of 13 mostly historically black colleges and universities has become a giant reunion of sorts, with numerous activities not related to basketball. The 24 men’s and women’s games over six days are accompanied by concerts, celebrity-hosted parties, fashion shows and the what’s billed as the largest fan experience outside of the NCAA Final Four.

The Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association basketball tournament attracts thousands of middle- to upper-class African Americans who will spend millions on Charlotte businesses, especially those that are black-owned.
With $2 million in ticket sales, over 140,000 fans likely to come not just for basketball, but entertainment, many hotel rooms booked, concerts, shows, celebrity guests, and numerous parties, the tournament is expected to be bigger than ever.

Marvin Wilson, owner of Wilson’s Travel Secrets, an upscale travel and entertainment agency, has seen growth in the wealthier crowd coming into town  for the tournament. “Looking at private jets coming in I maybe did about two in the last year and a half, and this year I’ve already put together four,” he said.

CIAA Strikes Deal With Hotels, Fans Able to Lock in Rates

Written by , Posted in CIAA Basketball Tournament, Headlines

For years guests coming to the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) have claimed hotels charge too much.  CIAA leaders agreed, approached the city about and that’s why they have now struck a deal with hotels.

Several of them have agreed to give fans a locked rate while the CIAA comes to town.

“The good thing about CIAA,” Charlotte Area Hotel Association representative Sid Smith said. “Is they can lock in today what that rate might be three years from now.  That’s going to be a good deal.”
