The Sum of All Fears for Coppin State

Written by , Posted in Coppin State University, Editorial, Maryland

051413_Freeman_HrabowskiIt’s not hard to see the math on prospects for Coppin State University, an institution embattled with uneven funding and support, malignant program development and detached efforts to find a dynamic president to lead the institution by the University System of Maryland over generations. Because of what the USM failed to give Coppin over generations, but has scrambled to make up for over the last 25 years, tomorrow may bring the beginning of the end for the university as we know it.

Texts to MD Governor Reveal Details Behind Coppin State Presidential Resignation

Written by , Posted in Coppin State University, Leadership, Maryland, Politics

The Baltimore Sun today reports on a series of texts between Maryland Governor Martin O’Malley and his staffers inadvertently leaked to the paper in a freedom of information request. Among the texts, which outline thoughts on gaming in the state and policy decisions, was an exchange about dissatisfaction of the University System of Maryland with former Coppin State University President Reginald Avery, just a day before he resigned last October.

In another text message, Gallagher alerted O’Malley that Reginald Avery was resigning as head of Coppin State. “Avery is going to say he is stepping down, wants to do something different, etc.,” he wrote. He wrote that “apparently there has been disappointment” among University System of Maryland officials “with his lack of progress on outcomes, most notably retention/graduation rates.”

Clean Energy Legislation May Bring New Degree Programs to Maryland HBCUs

The Baltimore Business Journal this week reports that Maryland’s four historically black universities may be in line for new degree programs in clean and sustainable energy development, thanks to new legislation passed by state government this week. The state seeks to develop off-shore wind farms along its Atlantic coast, and benefits of the bill include more than $10 million in assistance funding for minority-owned businesses and a feasibility study to measure outcomes for clean energy programs at Bowie State, Coppin State, Morgan State and the University of Maryland Eastern Shore.

The 11-member committee, which includes the presidents of those schools, as well as the Maryland Secretary of Higher Education, or her designee, will issue a report to O’Malley and the General Assembly by July 2014.

Coppin State is interested in offering a program in clean energy which would enhance courses the Baltimore university already offers, including one on climate change, said Tiffany Jones, a Coppin State spokeswoman.

“We’re trying to breed graduates who are aware of environmental issues,” she said.

[mpoverlay]The Baltimore Sun earlier this week reported that Coppin State University will launch its first online degree program this fall.

The management degree, designed in conjunction with an online education consultant, Pearson Learning Solutions, will be available starting in September. Coppin officials said an internal survey found that 86 percent of students expressed interest in taking online courses. “This online program will provide students with more options to complete their degrees and move on to successful careers,” interim Provost Ronnie Collins said in a statement. Coppin State President Holds Campus Forum to Address Concerns

Written by , Posted in Coppin State University, Headlines, Leadership, Maryland

Coppin State University President Reginald Avery held a campus-wide town hall forum yesterday, addressing concerns from students, faculty and staff recently outlined in a ‘no confidence’ vote from CSU faculty.

“Put pressure on this president, criticize him, argue with him — whatever you want to do. That’s OK,” said Avery, who is starting his fifth year at Coppin. “I respect that.”

The hour-long town hall followed a 55-13 faculty vote in late February. The vote was a result of a series of concerns, including increasing university debt, unfilled positions for three of the university’s five deans and a failure last year to distribute $800,000 in need-based aid to students.

Avery laid out several steps he will take to improve his leadership. He plans to hold more open forums and create a president’s university advisory council to meet monthly beginning in April. (Baltimore Sun)

Norfolk State Starts Slow, Drops First Conference Game of the Season to Coppin State

Written by , Posted in Coppin State University, Headlines, Maryland, Norfolk State University, Sports

The Norfolk State men’s basketball team has never had a better season start in Division I play than their start to this season, but it was a slow start to last night’s home game against Coppin State that led to the Spartans’ first conference loss of the year, 87-82.

12 turnovers and poor 3-point shooting by NSU aided Coppin in building a 35-13 halftime lead. A 69-point second half burst by the Spartans was not enough to overcome the Eagles, who shot 62 percent from the field in the second half.

“It doesn’t take away any of our wins, it doesn’t take away our lead,” senior (Norfolk State) center Kyle O’Quinn said. “Almost no one makes it through undefeated. You build a lead in case this happens. This is why you play so hard early.” (Virginian-Pilot)
