Saint Paul’s Denied Accreditation Renewal, President Eddie Moore Plans Appeal

Written by , Posted in Headlines, Saint Paul's College, Virginia

The Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges today informed Saint Paul’s College that reaffirmation of its accreditation had been denied, jeopardizing the school’s ability to offer federal financial aid to students, and to retain its current student body. In a release, Saint Paul’s President Eddie Moore expressed disappointment with the decision.

“To say we are disappointed is a terrible under-statement,” said Moore. “To have raised nearly $5 million in six months despite the challenges before us, and effected a managerial and strategic turn-around putting the College on a trajectory for a solid future was a team effort which resulted in a monumental achievement. If we can do this in half a year – imagine what we could do if allowed to continue reaffirmed.”

FAMU Board of Trustees Votes ‘No Confidence’ in President James Ammons

Written by , Posted in Florida, Florida A&M University, Headlines, Leadership

Ammons

[mpoverlay]The Florida A&M University Board of Trustees today approved a vote of ‘no confidence’ in President James Ammons, just one day after signaling approval for many of his proposed measures to combat hazing and right the university’s image in the aftermath of the hazing death of drum major Robert Champion.

“This is very serious for the future of this university,” Ammons said after Thursday’s vote. “You have my commitment to fix them and get this job done.”

The school has been reeling since the November death of drum major Robert Champion. Eleven members of the band have been charged with felony hazing for allegedly beating him to death. The death exposed a wide culture of hazing at the school. Critics say Ammons and other administrators ignored it. (Associated Press)

Dr. Ammons signed a five-year contract extension last year, but faces criticism for other issues involving alleged fraudulent audits and several resignations of key administration in the last year.[/mpoverlay]

FAMU Seeking $800K to ‘Re-Brand’ the University, Eyes Capital Campaign

Written by , Posted in Finance, Florida, Florida A&M University, Headlines, Leadership

[mpoverlay]Officials from Florida A&M University today made the case for more than $800,000 to be cleared for a re-branding effort for the university. The initiative would include the hiring of a new executive director of communications and the retention of an outside marketing firm, all moving the university towards a five-year, $50 million capital campaign.

The amount would be in addition to a request for more than $200,000 to hire a special anti-hazing official for the campus and a compliance officer for the Marching 100.

Trustee Belinda Shannon said the rebranding campaign must include a comprehensive communication strategy as the university works to reinvent its image in the wake of the November hazing death of drum major Robert Champion and other persistent institutional problems.

“We are facing a crisis of historical proportion,” Shannon said Trustee Karl White warned that the money the advancement office is asking for to fund the rebranding campaign may not be enough.

“I am confident we have more than an $800,000 problem,” White said.  (Tallahassee Democrat)[/mpoverlay]

The class of 2012 of The Middle College at North Carolina A&T has made history. This class is the first in the school’s 8-year history to graduate 100 percent of the senior class.

For the first time in the school’s history, the entire graduating class has been accepted to a 4-year college or university. Graduates have earned more than $1 million in scholarships and grants, earned service learning diplomas and been named North Carolina Academic Scholars.

Principal Eric Hines credits the success of the class to the leadership of the Guilford County Schools and N.C. A&T.

Release of Marching 100 Member Academic Records For Hazing Trial Under Review

Written by , Posted in Florida, Florida A&M University, Headlines

[mpoverlay]The Orlando Sentinel today reports that the academic records of 30 Florida A&M University students will be reviewed for public release in the hazing death trial of eleven Marching 100 members accused of killing drum major Robert Champion.

Using subpoena powers in December, homicide investigators obtained school records of 30 students, including potential witnesses and all of those charged in Champion’s death. Some records may be protected by a federal law known as the Family Education Rights and Privacy Act.

Circuit Judge Marc Lubet, assigned to preside over the criminal hazing cases, said the university should have notified the students before turning the documents over to investigators and given each student an opportunity to object.

He said FAMU could potentially lose federal funding if they surrendered records in violation of law. (Orlando Sentinel)[/mpoverlay]
