Written by , Posted in Fisk University, Knoxville College, Lane College, LeMoyne-Owen College, Tennessee, Tennessee State University

“The goals of these obesity-awareness campaigns are to educate college students and others about the problems associated with being overweight or obese, and to engage them in activities fostering changes to improve lifelong health,” said Lesia Walker, director of the state Department of Health’s Office of Minority Health and Disparities Elimination, in the release. “Statistics show a disproportionate number of African-Americans are either overweight or obese, and we have to start reaching people with important messages earlier in life to make a difference.”

Lane Students Protest Violence, Draw Attention of Local Leaders

Written by , Posted in Community, Headlines, Lane College, News

Nearly half an hour after Justin Clark, a man who was shot in the head yesterday on the Lane College campus was pronounced dead, more than 200 Lane students were in the streets bordering the college, demanding an end to violence and safety for their campus.

The students blocked traffic on a mile-and-a-half march to city hall, where they spoke with police and city government officials about their concerns.

Officials with the Jackson Police Department and city government were soon on the scene, speaking with student leaders. Lynn Henning, director of personnel, came out to take four of the student leaders to meet with Mayor Jerry Gist.

In the meeting, Gist shared his appreciation for the students’ passion and said the city should work toward a solution to keep Lane students safe. Gist was later joined by Councilman Johnny Dodd and Lane College President Wesley McClure in the meeting to discuss working toward that goal. (The Jackson Sun)

Clark was not a Lane student. No arrests have been made and no information released on the identity of the shooter.

FAMU, North Carolina A&T, Savannah State Named Among America’s Most Popular Universities

Written by , Posted in Bowie State University, Claflin University, Florida, Florida A&M University, Headlines, Lane College, Maryland, Morehouse College, Morgan State University, North Carolina A&T State University, Savannah State University, South Carolina, Talladega College, Tennessee State University, Xavier University of Louisiana

Florida A&M and North Carolina A&T have ranked among US News and World Report’s annual ‘Most Popular Colleges and Universities’ list. The list is compiled by the yield of students who enroll in a university after being accepted.

FAMU ranks 14th on the national list, while NCA&T ranks 20th. They are the only two HBCUs to rank in the top 50. Bowie State, Tennessee State and Morgan State also made the top 150 schools.

Among the liberal arts colleges, Savannah State University was ranked the fourth most popular, placing behind three military academies. Officials attribute the popularity and high conversion rate of applicants to enrollees to a focus on the state of Georgia.

Savannah State, whose rank is not published in U.S. News’s 2012 rankings of National Liberal Arts Colleges, credits its change in recruiting practices for its position on the list. “One of the things we’ve done is just focused on Georgia,” says Timothy Cranford, executive director of enrollment services at the university. “In the past, we’ve done recruitment all over the nation, but we’ve really focused in on our in-state residents.” (US News and World Report)

Morehouse, Xavier of Louisiana, Lane, Claflin, Talladega and Dillard also made the top 150 liberal arts list.

Written by , Posted in Lane College

Christopher Dean may be more than 75 miles from Memphis, but strolling through the Lane College campus, his mind is still on home, his mother.

“I can’t wait to be in a situation where I can help her,” Dean said.

Christopher Dean was raised in the Foote Homes Housing Project. As a Booker T. Washington High School student, his tear-stained face was captured on video watching the demolition of another project, Cleaborn Homes, a place where many of his family and friends lived.

Benedict closes season with 19-13 defeat

Written by , Posted in Benedict College, Lane College, Sports

There was no miracle finish for the 2011 Benedict College Tigers football team, as a last-second, last-ditch effort fell short and Lane College took a 19-13 victory Saturday in a NCAA Division II contest at Charlie W. Johnson Stadium.

Trailing 19-0 at the half, Benedict rallied with a pair of touchdowns in the second half and got the ball with 1:01 left in the game and 77 yards away from a potential game-winning touchdown and extra point.

The Tigers picked up some big yardage, as quarterback Simeon Kelley rushed for gains of 12 and 20 yards, and then completed a 17-yard pass to Harlon Samuels for a first down at the 23-yard line. But then the Tigers stalled, with Kelley throwing an incomplete pass on first down, a delay of game penalty on second down pushed them back five yards, and Kelley was sacked on the next play.

Tennessee HBCUs Partner to Reduce State K-8 Achievement Gaps in Mathematics

Written by , Posted in Fisk University, Lane College, LeMoyne-Owen College, Tennessee, Tennessee State University

Tennessee State University, a historically black school in Nashville, has devised a program to improve math instruction in the K-8 schools that could help narrow gaps in student achievement and college completion rates.

In collaboration with four other historically black colleges in Tennessee, the program updates the math knowledge and instructional techniques of experienced classroom teachers in the state’s schools serving students from lower income families. A smaller number of education majors from the five HBCUs also participate.

A preliminary evaluation indicates that the program, begun in 2007, has improved participating teachers’ knowledge and instruction in math as well as their attitude toward the subject.
