Livingstone Alum Gives His Life to Chronicling School’s Sports History

Written by , Posted in Alumni, Livingstone College, North Carolina

When John Daniels completed his career at Livingstone College as a three-year varsity men’s tennis player, there was virtually no evidence of his ever having competed at the college.

So for more than 10 years, Daniels has committed his life to making sure athletes are ever forgotten in Blue Bear History, serving as the unofficial LC photojournalist.

Daniels took team pictures and other photographs for school publications, but more important he captured individuals competing. It became his personal tradition on senior award nights to present Livingstone athletes with their own portfolios – framed photos and many other images he caught of them in action over their careers.

“I made a lot of prints,” Daniels says, looking back, “because I want the kids to have hard evidence of what they did in college.”

Two Livingstone College students are recovering from injuries and a suspect arrested following a fight and stabbing that took place just outside of the college on Thursday night. According to the Salisbury Post, students Daulon Sampson and Charles Thomas were assaulted by Jaivon Scott following an earlier argument at a local grocery store.

“Sampson and Thomas told police that Scott yelled at them and threatened them, and when he approached them at the gate, he hit Thomas in the face. Sampson ran over to help, but he fell to the ground when Scott reportedly came at him with the knife. Police say Scott stabbed Sampson in the leg, cutting a gash that was 4 to 5 inches long.”

Thomas also sustained injuries after being hit in the face with a broken bottle. Scott was charged with assault with a deadly weapon.

An educator whose illustrious career has spanned more than three decades and whose name will go down in history told Livingstone College students on February 7 there are no dumb questions, they should be as respectful of janitors as they are board chairmen and they should take care of themselves spiritually, mentally and physically.

Dr. Belle Wheelan, president of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges, gave a spirited speech during Livingstone College’s 134th Founder’s Day ceremony. Instead of trying to impress people with her vast knowledge, Wheelan imparted practical, yet sage advice to the college’s students, faculty, staff and special guests.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. – The commissioner of the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association on Nov. 2 encouraged football players at Livingstone College and Johnson C. Smith University to be proud of the legacy of which they’re a part.

She also encouraged them to take advantage of the opportunities afforded by their institution, to stand up for what they believe in, to think positively and to make good choices.

Jacqie Carpenter, who became commissioner of the CIAA in September, was the keynote speaker at the Commemorative Classic Hall of Fame Team Banquet Nov. 2 in Grimes Lounge on JCSU’s campus. The banquet was the precursor to the Commemorative Classic contest between The Livingstone College Blue Bears and The JCSU Golden Bulls, played Nov. 3 in the Irwin Belk Complex on Smith’s campus.

Just before 11:30 a.m. on Oct. 22, Shannon Davis entered a voting booth at the Rowan County Public Library in Salisbury, N.C.

Minutes later, she inserted her ballot into a vote counter, grabbed an “I Voted” sticker and walked out.

Davis, a senior biology major at Livingstone College, couldn’t contain her excitement. Words conveyed what her smile couldn’t.

“I’ve never voted before so I was kind of nervous,” said Davis, 21 of Charlotte. “After I voted I felt empowered. Wow! I actually voted.”

Livingstone’s Dorian Edwards Shines as Football Player, SGA President

Written by , Posted in Leadership, Livingstone College, North Carolina, Sports, Students

As a kid growing up in Kinston, N.C., Dorian Edwards had his heart set on playing football at N.C. State University.

In high school, Edwards played center for the Kinston High School Vikings, earning All Area honors his freshman and sophomore years and All Conference honors his junior and senior years. During his senior season, he was selected to play in the prestigious East-West All-Star football game.

Edwards was good, but at 5 feet 10 inches tall and 280 pounds, Division I coaches didn’t consider him big enough to compete at the Division I level. Edwards was offered a chance to become a member of the Wolfpack – via an academic scholarship.

“I was almost in tears when I realized I was too small to play football for a Division I school,” Edwards recalled this week. “To be so close to the opportunity to live out my dream and have something I couldn’t control stop me really hurt.”

Edwards didn’t remain disappointed for long.
