A partnership between the United States and Brazil will bring more than 150 Brazilian college students to the United States this fall to study at historically black colleges and universities.

The partnership is a part of the HBCU-Brazil Alliance, a program created to increase the number of minority graduates and professionals in the industries of science, technology, engineering and mathematics, while exposing  Afro-Brazilian students and faculty to successful research, economic development and social advancement within a context of historical and systemic racism and discrimination.

The Alliance is an arm of the US-Brazil Joint Action Plan on Racial Equality, developed by the White House Initiative on Historically Black Colleges and Universities and managed in partnership with the Brazilian Federal Agency for Support and Evaluation of Graduate Education (CAPES’).

‘This partnership is just one example of the Alliance’s commitment to diversity, cultural sensitivity and to providing a world-class education to an eager pool of student talent from throughout Brazil,” said Dr. T. Joan Robinson, Chair of the HBCU-Brazil Alliance and Provost and Vice-President of Academic Affairs at Morgan State University. “We are honored to represent and build upon the collaborative interests of the United States through international engagement and academic support.”

More than 20 HBCUs will welcome Brazilian exchange students for a one-year exchange program. Students will live on campus and study in a variety of undergraduate degree programs with a S.T.E.M. focus, with all tuition, fees and room and board covered by the Brazilian government. The program’s goal is to eventually welcome 1,000 Brazilian students to HBCU campuses. Participating HBCUs include:

Emmanuel Johnson Named North Carolina A&T’s First Student Fulbright Scholar

Written by , Posted in North Carolina, North Carolina A&T State University, Students

Emmanuel Johnson a graduating senior from New Brunswick, NJ., was recently named North Carolina A&T’s first student Fulbright Scholar. The computer engineering major will pursue masters studies in robotics at the University of Birmingham in the United Kingdom. From the release:

Being a Fulbright awardee is an honor because of the naturally competitive nature of the program. According to Minnie Battle Mayes, director of the office of international programs, “after the application the first round is to be recommended for the award then you have to be approved in-country.” Johnson was recommended by the campus Fulbright Committee out of a pool of 10 interested students at A&T.

Johnson understands the significance of his position but his passion is to use his story to inspire others. The scholar asks, “If I can make it from my situation, coming to college with no money, never having had a 4.0 and being able to have multiple semesters with a 4.0, what’s stopping you?”

Could North Carolina Close a State-Supported HBCU?

Written by , Posted in Breaking News, Elizabeth City State University, Fayetteville State University, North Carolina, North Carolina A&T State University, North Carolina Central University, Politics, Winston-Salem State University

WRAL.com today reports on substantive changes coming to the University of North Carolina System of Higher Education. State Governor Pat McCrory has called for more than $130 million in cuts to higher education, and some lawmakers have suggested that 16 campuses in its system may be too many.

Of concern in this dialogue is the potential impact on the state’s historically black colleges and universities. No public statement has been made about planned or potential closure for any of the state’s five public HBCUs – Fayetteville State, North Carolina Central, North Carolina A&T, Elizabeth City State and Winston-Salem State.  The rational is that the historic neglect of these institutions and their resulting struggles with enrollment, retention, fundraising and influence on state industry will eventually yield a proposal that may add one of the big five into talks about closure.

Signs to watch for – talks about programmatic duplication, merging or underperformance. Elizabeth City State was the last HBCU confronted with this kind of discussion, thanks to the rhetoric about the viability of its joint pharmacy program with UNC Chapel Hill. Today must begin the campaign against any of these schools being placed in discussions for closure – alumni and supporters cannot wait until a name is called out in the NC legislature to react.
