Could North Carolina Close a State-Supported HBCU?

Written by , Posted in Breaking News, Elizabeth City State University, Fayetteville State University, North Carolina, North Carolina A&T State University, North Carolina Central University, Politics, Winston-Salem State University

WRAL.com today reports on substantive changes coming to the University of North Carolina System of Higher Education. State Governor Pat McCrory has called for more than $130 million in cuts to higher education, and some lawmakers have suggested that 16 campuses in its system may be too many.

Of concern in this dialogue is the potential impact on the state’s historically black colleges and universities. No public statement has been made about planned or potential closure for any of the state’s five public HBCUs – Fayetteville State, North Carolina Central, North Carolina A&T, Elizabeth City State and Winston-Salem State.  The rational is that the historic neglect of these institutions and their resulting struggles with enrollment, retention, fundraising and influence on state industry will eventually yield a proposal that may add one of the big five into talks about closure.

Signs to watch for – talks about programmatic duplication, merging or underperformance. Elizabeth City State was the last HBCU confronted with this kind of discussion, thanks to the rhetoric about the viability of its joint pharmacy program with UNC Chapel Hill. Today must begin the campaign against any of these schools being placed in discussions for closure – alumni and supporters cannot wait until a name is called out in the NC legislature to react.

Harold Hunter, the first African-American to sign an NBA contract and to coach an Olympic basketball team, died today at the age of 86, the Charlotte Post reports.

Hunter, who was also the first black man to coach the U.S. Olympic basketball team, played guard at N.C. College (now N.C. Central University), where he led the Eagles to the 1950 CIAA tournament championship. On April 26, 1950, Hunter signed an NBA contract but was cut during training camp and never played a regular-season game. The first African American to play in an NBA game was another CIAA standout – West Virginia State’s Earl Lloyd.

A legendary coach at Tennessee State University, Hunter compiled a 172-67 record in national over a nine-year career in Nashville. He was inducted into the NCCU Athletic Hall of Fame in 1984.

The Case for NCCU as the Best Team in the MEAC

Written by , Posted in Norfolk State University, North Carolina, North Carolina Central University, Sports, Virginia

That is because North Carolina Central is the best team statistically in the league. The Eagles, who are 11-1 after a loss to Savannah State, own the best score in the Pomeroy ratings, in the MRI, and in the Sagarin numbers. The first two have Central in the 130s which is a better spot than either ranking gives to Northeastern, a team that clinched a share of its regular season conference title Wednesday night.

But because North Carolina Central has a loss, the league’s face is Norfolk State.

Written by , Posted in Alumni, North Carolina, North Carolina Central University

On Feb. 6, 1960, an organizing meeting was held in the freshmen bowl on the campus of NCC with the purpose of breaking, “the major racial barrier which exists in Woolworth stores.” When asked about the sit-in protests, he remarked the protests would be “hurting the cash register, and when you hurt the cash register you are bound to get results.” On Monday, Feb. 8, 1960, Streeter along with Callis Brown and Robert Kornegay led 17 North Carolina College students and three students from Duke University as they converged upon the lunch counter of Woolworth’s, sat in the vacant seats, and asked to be served.

North Carolina Central University is seeking to collect almost $60,000 in improper payments given to an IT and facilities manager at the North Carolina Central University School of Law between 2005 and 2012.

According to a state audit released yesterday, Gregory Clinton received several bonuses for his oversight of a temporary move of the school and installation of smart classrooms on campus, according to a state audit released yesterday. From WRAL.com:

The dean gave Clinton a $7,500 bonus, and Clinton asked his successor for similar payments when the renovations were complete and the law school returned to campus, the audit states. The new dean told auditors that Clinton told him that the former dean had already agreed to provide the payments, so another $15,000 was approved.

In 2010, N.C. Central officials asked Clinton to oversee the installation of electronic classrooms across the university, and he was paid $19,165 in fiscal 2011 and $17,606 in fiscal 2012 for his work on the project, according to the audit.

North Carolina Central Honors Veterans, Opens Service Center

North Carolina Central University observed Veterans Day on Monday, Nov. 12, in two ways.

In the morning, nearly 50 NCCU military veterans — students, faculty and staff — were honored with speeches and a flag ceremony in front of the statue of university founder James E. Shepard at the heart of the campus. The gathered crowd saluted the veterans with a hearty round of applause.

The afternoon brought a less formal but more substantive indication of gratitude: the grand opening of NCCU’s new Veterans Center, a meeting place and source of services for the university’s growing contingent of veterans.
