Written by , Posted in Pioneer Bowl, Sports, Stillman College

If the Stillman College football team can win on Saturday, it will achieve the best record since the school joined the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Association.

Stillman will celebrate its homecoming with a game against Concordia of Selma. Kickoff is set for 1:30 p.m.

Under the direction of first-year coach Teddy Keaton, Stillman is 7-3 overall, 5-2 in the SIAC. The Tigers were in contention for a berth in the inaugural SIAC Championship Game until they lost to Miles 9-7 on Oct. 27.

The Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association and the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference have formally agreed to a three-year partnership with the City of Columbus, GA to host the Pioneer Bowl. Columbus will be the second city in Georgia -Atlanta was the first – to host the NCAA-sanctioned contest between the two Division II HBCU conferences. From the release:

“Columbus is a bustling city and a perfect fit for the Pioneer Bowl,” says CIAA Commissioner Leon G. Kerry. “The Pioneer Bowl is an important game for the HBCU and Division II football communities and we’re glad that the city of Columbus is excited to partner in this tradition with us.”

“I am extremely delighted about the opportunity to bring the Pioneer Bowl to a terrific host city.  We will work hard to ensure that Pioneer XII offers our students, alumni and fans a rich and exciting bowl game experience,” said SIAC Commissioner Greg Moore.

Did Anybody Go to the Pioneer Bowl?

Written by , Posted in Elizabeth City State University, North Carolina, Pioneer Bowl, Sports, Tuskegee University

And I’m obviously asking that in an exaggerated kind of way, because clearly some people attended yesterday’s Pioneer Bowl. But between the slipshod planning by the CIAA and SIAC for this event and the overwhelming performance of Tuskegee over Elizabeth City State in their 21-7 win, it may have been appropriate for just a few folks to travel to South Carolina for a bowl game that never should have been played.

At least, that’s the story this slideshow tells. Maybe one of the reported 1,892 fans in attendance can tell me a different story.

2009 Pioneer Bowl – The Mess We Fully Expected

Written by , Posted in Pioneer Bowl, Sports

Some weeks ago, I cautioned that the late announcement of the 2009 Pioneer Bowl would wreak having on planning and execution for what is supposed to be a major black college bowl game.

But even I didn’t expect to be this right.

Benedict Athletic Director Willie Washington said the school was notified last week by the SIAC conference that they had been selected to host the bowl game. It gives the college just over a week to promote and plan for the game that could attract 10,000 people.

Tuskegee to Face Elizabeth City State in 2009 Pioneer Bowl

Written by , Posted in Elizabeth City State University, North Carolina, Pioneer Bowl, Sports, Tuskegee University

The Pioneer Bowl was canceled in 2008, with both conferences citing a desire to develop better planning for the event. Translation – the price wasn’t right; either for the conferences, or for the City of Columbia.

So, the Pioneer Bowl is back on, and features a conference champion in Tuskegee and a would-be champion in Elizabeth City State. The match-up seems good enough, but the timing, Lord the timing. The CIAA and SIAC officially have two weeks and three days to fill up an 11,000 seat stadium with fan bases out of Alabama and North Carolina in early December.

Yeah. Good luck with that. If we’re lucky, we might get an update to the Pioneer Bowl website by the end of the day.

So….Will There Be a Pioneer Bowl This Year?

Written by , Posted in Pioneer Bowl, Sports

If there is to be a Pioneer Bowl, the CIAA and SIAC are doing a great job of keeping it on the low. From the Pioneer Bowl website:

The Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC) and the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) have suspended the Pioneer Bowl for 2008. The game was scheduled to take place in Columbia, SC on December 6, 2008 at Charlie W. Johnson stadium. The Pioneer Bowl will resume in 2009 at a date and time to be determined.

That was from a release on October 31, 2008. And with three days left to go in the month, the conferences are running short on their customary two-months-before-kickoff timeframe to announce whether this thing is on or off.

Shame of it is, the two teams that will (or would have) played in the game could (or could have) make (or have made) it a great show. Three out of the last four installments of the game were decided by two points or fewer, and with the way the top teams in the CIAA and SIAC are playing, it is (or was) likely to be another offensive shootout.
