college-photo_13498._445x280-zmmSaint Augustine’s University today announced that it will not move forward with plans to acquire Saint Paul’s College in Lawrenceville, VA. SAU had initially hinted in late 2012 that it would consider taking on Saint Paul’s, which was struggling with low enrollment and questions surrounding its accreditation.

“This was a very difficult decision to make.  We explored several options to in an effort to make the acquisition viable for Saint Augustine’s University.  However, after completing our due diligence, we concluded that the acquisition of Saint Paul’s College, at this time, would significantly challenge the fiscal stability of Saint Augustine’s University,” said Saint Augustine’s University president, Dianne Boardley Suber.”

Saint Paul’s will be able appeal to the Saint Augustine’s Board of Trustees at its meeting on May 31 to reconsider its decision.

Ashley L. Taylor, Jr., counsel for Saint Paul’s and a partner with Troutman Sanders LLP stated that, “Our pleadings in this case explain how SACS failed to consider certain critical information. Saint Paul’s Announces Suspension of Classes, College Operations

Written by , Posted in Saint Paul's College, Virginia

Saint Paul’s College yesterday announced the suspension of its classes and student housing, as the university faces the revocation of its accreditation by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools. The Richmond Times-Dispatch today reports that the school will continue to offer its evening accelerated degree program for adults, and will keep open its child care center serving about 100 students from the area.

“We made a prudent decision, and it was a difficult one to make,” Kimberly Tetlow, vice president for institutional advancement, said Monday.

SPC’s signature program, the Single Parent Support System which provided housing for 19 single-parent families last year, has been discontinued. Students who were close to graduation have been cleared to resume classes in satellite locations around the state.

The appeal hearing with SACS will be held on Aug. 20.

Saint Paul’s Denied Accreditation Renewal, President Eddie Moore Plans Appeal

Written by , Posted in Headlines, Saint Paul's College, Virginia

The Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges today informed Saint Paul’s College that reaffirmation of its accreditation had been denied, jeopardizing the school’s ability to offer federal financial aid to students, and to retain its current student body. In a release, Saint Paul’s President Eddie Moore expressed disappointment with the decision.

“To say we are disappointed is a terrible under-statement,” said Moore. “To have raised nearly $5 million in six months despite the challenges before us, and effected a managerial and strategic turn-around putting the College on a trajectory for a solid future was a team effort which resulted in a monumental achievement. If we can do this in half a year – imagine what we could do if allowed to continue reaffirmed.”

The challenge grant was established thanks to the generosity of Virginia philanthropist Jane Batten.

Moore called on alumni and friends of Saint Paul’s College to step forward. “We have interest from other major donors to create another challenge grant for the community and we hope to make an announcement of a new challenge in the very near future,” said Moore.
