Jacques Curtis Named DII Bulletin National Coach of the Year

Shaw University head coach Jacques Curtis has been named the 2012 Schelde North America/Women’s Division II Bulletin Coach of the Year, the publication announced Monday in its April issue.

Curtis led his Lady Bears to a 29-6 overall record, the 2012 Division II national championship, the CIAA title and a 15-game win streak to close out the season.

“Jacques did a great job with his team this season and had his players playing at the highest level. He is most deserving of this honor,” said Women’s Division II Bulletin editor and publisher Gary Rubin. “Along with Schelde North America, we are pleased to recognize him for his achievement and hard work.”

Shaw Wins NCAA Division II National Women’s Basketball Championship

“We are going to give them a game worthy of television.”

Shaw head coach Jacques Curtis had said those words in a press conference prior to the NCAA Division II Women’s Basketball Championship.

Tonight, his players made him a prophet as Shaw came from an 11-point halftime deficit to claim an 88-82 overtime victory over #2 ranked Ashland to claim Shaw’s first national championship in any sport.

“This is what Coach recruited us for,” said Shaw senior center Aslea Williams. “I wasn’t going to finish my senior year with a loss. Even when I didn’t play well, my teammates had my back.”

Shaw Lady Bears Advance to National Title Game

Three Lady Bears had double-doubles to lead Shaw past #15 Rollins 87-71 in a game played at Bill Greehey Arena on the campus of St. Mary’s University. With the win, the Lady Bears advance to play #2 Ashland for the Division II NCAA Women’s Basketball Championship Friday night.

Crystal Harris led the Lady Bears with 24 points and 14 rebounds, while Kyria Buford had 22 points and 10 rebounds and Aslea Williams scored 12 and pulled in 14 boards.

Rollins had no answer for Shaw’s “bigs” and could not find an outside shooting touch, hitting only five of 29 from beyond the arc and only 36.5 percent from the field. In contrast, Shaw sank 40.3 percent of its shots.

Shaw Lady Bears Ready for Another Run at NCAA Women’s Basketball Championship

For the second time in as many years, the Shaw University women’s basketball team has advanced to the Elite Eight of the Division II NCAA women’s basketball championship. The Lady Bears move on with a convincing 70-53 upset of nationally ranked Edinboro (Pa). on the Edinboro home court last night.

“It’s hard to get to the Elite Eight, so to be able to get there in back-to-back years is terrific,” said Shaw head women’s basketball coach Jacques Curtis in an interview with the Digest.

Curtis, who has won six CIAA titles in 11 years at Shaw and makes his fourth appearance in the Elite Eight, says that matchups are going to be key in the national semifinals.

“It’s different because there are eight good teams, and even though we’re past the point of being nervous, at this point in the season it’s all about matchups. If you get matched up with the wrong team, you could be one and done. We’ll be prepared to play Pittsburg State and to see how we can find some advantages.”

Shaw ranks in the top 20 nationally in scoring offense and average margin of victory, and is tenth in the nation in opponent field goal percentage. The Lady Bears match up favorably with the Pittsburg State, a team yielding 62 points per game this season.

As for what Curtis will tell his team prior to this year’s edition of the Elite Eight, he says that the ladies know it will be business as usual.

“We’ve got a large group that was there last year, and it was our first year to advance to the Final Four. We’ll get some rest, and whatever we’re running, it’s as good as we’re going to run it. It’s about letting the body rest and getting mentally prepared. It’s good to be going there with eight seniors, but they know its one and done. We’ve got three games to show what we can do.”

Shaw Lady Bears Advance to Second Round of NCAA Tournament

Kyria Buford, Aslea Williams and Brittany Ransom had over 20 points apiece, but it was a stifling second-half defense that made the difference as Shaw downed West Virginia Wesleyan in the first round of the NCAA Tournament.

With the win, the Lady Bears improve to 24-6 on the season and advance to the regional semifinals where they will take on Gannon, who defeated Johnson C. Smith earlier in the afternoon. West Virginia Wesleyan finishes the season 24-7.

“It’s always good to advance,” said Shaw head coach Jacques Curtis. “Everyone here is a good team. What we saw on the tape is pretty much the game we got.”

Shaw Earns 5th Seed in NCAA Tourney, Opens Against Indiana (Pa.)

Shaw will open its NCAA run on Saturday, March 10, when the Bears will take on Indiana PA in a regional hosted by West Liberty. The Bears, ranked fifth in the nation, will be making their second straight appearance in the Division II NCAA Tournament and second straight trip to West Liberty.

Shaw enters the Atlantic Regional as the second seed, while IUP is the seventh seed. The contest will be played at 2:30 on Friday.

The Bears finished the season 25-3 after a semifinal loss in the CIAA Tournament to Winston-Salem State. They had completed the CIAA regular season undefeated. Shaw is 7-2 on neutral courts so far this season.

Shaw Wins Second Straight CIAA Women’s Basketball Championship

Tournament MVP Aslea Williams scored 17 points as Shaw toppled Johnson C. Smith University 72-66 Saturday (March 3) in the CIAA championship game at Time Warner Cable Arena. The Lady Bears captured their second straight CIAA title and seventh in 10 seasons.

Kyria Buford added 11 points and Crystal Harris came off the bench to score 10 points for the Lady Bears (23-6 overall), who lost only one CIAA game this season. That defeat occurred at the hands of the Lady Golden Bulls as both teams split during the regular season. The Lady Bears own the Lady Golden Bulls during the postseason, however. They are 5-0 against the Lady Golden Bulls in the league title game since 2003.

“We expected to win,” Buford said afterward. “But we knew we couldn’t take them for granted. That’s what we did the first time against them.”

Virginia Union’s Wooten-Cherry, Shaw’s Hill Named CIAA Basketball Coaches of the Year

Barvenia Wooten-Cherry, the head women’s basketball coach at Virginia Union University and Shaw University men’s basketball coach Cleo Hill, Jr. were named the CIAA Basketball Coaches of the Year at the conference tip-off tournament luncheon in Charlotte yesterday.

Wooten-Cherry, who is in her second year as head coach of the Lady Panthers, took VUU from a 3-23 record last season to the championship of the CIAA Northern Division this season.

The Lady Panthers finished with a 12-13 record overall and a 9-7 record in CIAA play. The divisional championship was the first for a VUU women’s team since 2003.

Hill led the Bears to an undefeated season in the CIAA and a 24-2 record overall. Shaw is currently ranked sixth in the nation by the National Association of Basketball Coaches.

#6 Shaw Finishes CIAA Season Undefeated

CIAA Player of the Year Malik Alvin and his All-CIAA teammate Tony Smith paced Shaw as they downed Saint Augustine’s 64-62 in a thriller played at a packed Emery Gymnasium on Thursday night. With the win, #6 Shaw completes an undefeated CIAA season and wins their 20th in a row.

The Bears improve to 24-2 on the season, 16-0 in the CIAA and 10-0 in the Southern Division. The Falcons even their record at 13-13, 8-8 in the conference and 3-7 in the division.

“This means we have a very good team and a very good coaching staff,” said Shaw head coach Cleo Hill, Jr. “This has been a magical season and I didn’t think we’d come this far and lose to a cross-town rival. That said, they (Saint Augustine’s) played with a lot of pride and a very good game plan.”
