Written by , Posted in Spelman College

The King Center today launched an online digital archive in honor of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., making thousands of images, transcripts and information about the Civil Rights leader available for public viewing  for the first time.

Spelman College students played an integral role in the archiving and presentation of the documents.

Spelman students and alumnae comprise about a third of the individuals involved in the historic project. Johnson says of her experience, “It is exceptionally relevant that the women of Spelman College play such an enormous role with this project considering the King family legacy at Spelman. Dr. King’s funeral was even held in Sisters Chapel on Spelman’s campus.”

For the last six months, Spelman students have worked on the project with a diverse group of people including managers from JPMorgan Chase’s Technology for Social Good program, U.S. military veterans from The Veterans Curation Program, King Center staff, and students from Morehouse College, Emory University and Kennesaw State University.

Spelman Students Gain Hands-on Experience in Neuroscience Research

Written by , Posted in Research, Spelman College

Isadora Porter, Jasmine Jenkins, Ebony Mason and Niara Taylor, all C’2013, are trying to find answers to some pretty tough neuroscientific questions:How can a protein act as a neuroprotectant against inflammatory stimuli? Or how can a particular gene affect the social behavior in small rodents like prairie voles? By researching these questions, the students hope to gain insight for the advance treatment of major neurological-related ailments, such as Parkinson’s and Alzheimer’s diseases.

Porter, Jenkins, Mason and Taylor are among a select group of Atlanta-area college students involved in cutting-edge research that could one day change the field of neuroscience. Thanks to the Atlanta Neuroscience Education and Training Program, or NET/work as it’s more commonly known, all four students are gaining hands-on experience in neuroscience, the study of the human nervous system, the brain, and the biological basis of consciousness, perception, memory, and learning.
