But the scary truth is that college graduates are having an increasingly difficult time finding work after graduation, and employers complain that most college graduates show up for their first day of work without the most important thing—real job skills. But how can shiny new graduates, fresh out of their college robes, be expected to possess practical job skills before landing their first jobs?

Paul Quinn College (PQC) is so glad that you asked.

Major League Baseball today announced that its annual Urban League Invitational will feature four baseball teams from historically black colleges and universities. Alabama State, Southern, Prairie View A&M and Texas Southern will compete in the round robin tournament beginning Friday, Feb. 22 at Minute Maid Park in Houston, home of the Houston Astros.

“Major League Baseball would like to congratulate the four teams and all the student-athletes who will be participating in this year’s Urban Invitational,” said Frank Robinson, MLB Executive Vice President of Baseball Development. “This annual event is an important and special opportunity for the sport to showcase the talent and skill level demonstrated by HBCU programs deserving of national attention. We are proud to work alongside the Astros organization to not only provide a wonderful experience for those playing the games on the field, but also offer opportunities away from the diamond for the Houston community.”

It will be the first time in the six-year history of the event that all participating teams will be from HBCUs. The invitational is part of a league-wide initiative to grow baseball awareness and talent in minority communities nationwide.

Former Texas Southern Radio Volunteer Charged with Theft From Donors

A former volunteer at Texas Southern University’s KTSU radio station has been charged with stealing the credit card info of more than 50 of the station’s donors.

The Houston Chronicle reports that Michael Edward Whitfield used the info of at least 14 station supporters to buy electronic merchandise and gift cards, which he then sold.

(TSU Spokesperson Eva) Pickens said KTSU now has a stronger screening system for volunteers. Previously, workers signed affidavits attesting to their trustworthiness, she said.

“We found that kind of shocking, so we put a more stringent process in place,” Pickens said. “Everything now is online and we now have a secure system.”

The station has contacted all donors who may have their information compromised. Whitfield has previously served jail time and probation for credit card abuse and financial fraud.

Texas Southern Racial Discrimination Case Headed to Trial

Written by , Posted in Legal, Texas, Texas Southern University

“Texas Southern University treated one of the hardest working employees in its law school poorly for one reason and one reason only — she is Caucasian,” Garrison’s court complaint says. “It denied this woman compensation she earned, stripped her of job duties she was performing well and steadfastly put up roadblocks in an attempt to make her life so difficult that she would resign.”
