Clean Energy Legislation May Bring New Degree Programs to Maryland HBCUs

The Baltimore Business Journal this week reports that Maryland’s four historically black universities may be in line for new degree programs in clean and sustainable energy development, thanks to new legislation passed by state government this week. The state seeks to develop off-shore wind farms along its Atlantic coast, and benefits of the bill include more than $10 million in assistance funding for minority-owned businesses and a feasibility study to measure outcomes for clean energy programs at Bowie State, Coppin State, Morgan State and the University of Maryland Eastern Shore.

The 11-member committee, which includes the presidents of those schools, as well as the Maryland Secretary of Higher Education, or her designee, will issue a report to O’Malley and the General Assembly by July 2014.

Coppin State is interested in offering a program in clean energy which would enhance courses the Baltimore university already offers, including one on climate change, said Tiffany Jones, a Coppin State spokeswoman.

“We’re trying to breed graduates who are aware of environmental issues,” she said.

UMES Decides Against Football Reinstatement

Written by , Posted in Maryland, Sports, University of Maryland-Eastern Shore

UMES Football

University of Maryland Eastern Shore President Juliette Bell yesterday announced that the university will not reinstate football for at least another five years. The announcement follows a report from the university’s feasibility task force on football, which detailed the university’s lack of financial stability to accommodate the multi-million dollar investment in the sport.

The task force headed by Dr. Earl S. Richardson, a UMES graduate and retired president of Morgan State University, recommends the university focus on:

- Stabilizing the existing athletic program and balancing the existing athletic budget, including cost containment and generating additional non-state revenue.

- Conducting an in-house review within three years to determine if enough progress has been made that would position the university to reconsider the subject in five years.

- Continuing to support club football “as a way to maintain enthusiasm and school spirit.”

The Baltimore Sun today reports that more than 20 students may have witnessed the on-campus stabbing of senior Edmond St. Clair.

(UMES Interim Police Chief Kevin) Collins said after the assembly that officials believe there may be multiple witnesses to the stabbing because a campus security officer, who was in a nearby security booth, heard shouts from St. Clair’s brother and saw “20 to 30 students” running from the direction of the incident.

“Obviously they were there when it happened. The body was there, and they were running from it,” Collins said. “And the cameras show images of people and vehicles passing, so we know there are potential witnesses.”

Edmond St. Clair, a 21-year-old senior at the University of Maryland Eastern Shore was stabbed and killed last Saturday night on campus. St. Clair was stabbed during an alleged argument with three men still being sought by Princess Anne Police. From the Baltimore Sun:

St. Clair’s brother, Isaiah St. Clair, and their longtime friend Tre Hardy were driving to pick up Chinese food when three men stood in the road and wouldn’t move, Isaiah St. Clair said in an interview. He said Edmond St. Clair told him and Hardy to wait in the Honda while he went to talk to the men.

The next thing he realized, Isaiah St. Clair said, his brother was stabbed in the heart. He said he knelt next to his brother on the sidewalk and held the wound while Hardy ran to flag down a campus police officer. Isaiah St. Clair and Hardy said the men who stabbed Edmond lingered in the area before walking away from the crime scene.

Sinclair was a biology major and popular DJ on the campus. University officials held a town hall meeting yesterday, and say that campus security had been in place for recent homecoming festivities.
