UDC Lets Go Of Its Last Outside Lobbying Firm

Written by , Posted in Politics, University of the District of Columbia, Washington DC

Roetzel & Andress this week became the third firm this year to notify Congress that it had stopped lobbying the federal government for the University of the District of Columbia, leaving Washington’s only public college without any outside federal lobbyists.

The law firm ended its advocacy work for the university on Oct. 1 after two years of lobbying for it, according to congressional records. The disclosure follows lobbying termination notices filed by McAllister & Quinn in October and The Campbell Group in July. Now only internal lobbyists from the college are registered with Congress to engage in advocacy work for it

Former UDC Basketball Player Profiled in Film Documentary

Written by , Posted in Sports, University of the District of Columbia, Washington DC

No matter what country you come from, no matter what religion you practice and no matter what kind of food you eat…basketball is basketball. It’s something that’s able to transcend all boundaries and bring all types of people together.

Since about 1990, the NBA has seen a steady influx of international players. On opening night of the 2010-11 NBA Season, 28 of the league’s 30 teams featured at least one international player. And yes, some teams buried their international contributors at the end of their benches, but some—like the Toronto Raptors—made a living off of non-native basketball talent.

UDC, City Leadership Divided on Community College Autonomy

Written by , Posted in Leadership, University of the District of Columbia, Washington DC

University of the District of Columbia President Allen Sessoms recently told staff at the school that its community college branch would not be referred to as the Community College of the District of Columbia, but as the UDC Community College.

While university officials point to the message as a key to proper branding and clarity for accreditation review for the three-year old institution, leadership within the community college and D.C. City Council are eying its implications in keeping the school from eventual independent management and oversight. From the Washington Post:

Behind the scenes, Sessoms and the community college’s chief executive officer, Jonathan Gueverra, aren’t getting along, most observers agree, because Gueverra signed on to create a standalone school while Sessoms has sought to slow down the separation process. Some community college students have started to object to the slow-walk style, mounting an online petition drive to keep UDC from meddling with CCDC. But real obstacles remain to spinning off the community college — the accreditation process can take as long as five years, and without that in place, students would not be eligible for federal student aid.

City Council Chairman Kwame Brown has commissioned an independent board to lay out the financial and social impact of severance for the community college from UDC. The report is scheduled for a late November submission to the council.

UDC to Study Monument Proposal for African-American Military Hero

Written by , Posted in News, University of the District of Columbia, Washington DC

The University of the District of Columbia moved Tuesday to study the cost of erecting a monument to honor Col. Charles Young — a pioneering Black military leader who supporters say is often overlooked.

At a ceremony attended by elected officials, African-American veterans and representatives of the Omega Psi Phi fraternity, the university also announced plans to establish a $500,000 scholarship for veterans in the name of Young, a one-time commander of the Buffalo Soldiers, an all-Black regiment within the U.S. Army.

University officials and supporters say the tandem efforts are meant to right a historical wrong and make higher education more affordable for those who have served in uniform.

“We need to transform education for the veterans because they’ve transformed America for us,” UDC President Dr. Allen Sessoms said at the UDC Theater.

Council Approves Seven New UDC Trustees

Written by , Posted in Leadership, University of the District of Columbia, Washington DC

University of the District of Columbia President Dr. Allen L. Sessoms today thanked members of the Council of the District of Columbia for affirming Mayor Vincent Gray’s nominations to the UDC Board of Trustees. The addition of seven new Trustees brings to 14 the number of filled seats on the board and strengthens the growth and momentum of the revitalized university.

“Having a full board gives us greater traction as we continue transforming the District’s state university,” said Dr. Sessoms. “The individuals joining us now are truly dedicated and influential people who will be able to help us continue building a great university.” One nominee, Dr. Ricardo Brown, withdrew his candidacy after accepting a position with the University of Maryland System. One vacancy currently exists on the UDC Board of Trustees.

The Board had operated with as few as five members in recent years. But the additional members bring an added level of “influence and affluence” to augment the achievements of current trustees and will propel the university to the next level.
