A three-day search for two missing Virginia State University students will continue tomorrow morning, state police officials say. Jauwan Holmes and Marvell Edmondson were among a group of VSU students who went swimming in the Appomattox River on Saturday around 1:00 a.m., but never returned. From WVEC:

“Emergency responders came to look for the two students. They searched all day Friday, Saturday and Sunday by air and by boat. After no one was found, the search was suspended Sunday night and will resume Monday morning.”

Spring Game Opens Latrell Scott Era at Virginia State

Written by , Posted in Sports, Virginia, Virginia State University

ETTRICK, Va — For the first time in a decade, Virginia State had someone new on the sideline overseeing its Orange and Blue spring game.

Latrell Scott, an former All-American tight end at Hampton who replaced Andrew Faison in January, made his official, unofficial debut Saturday as the head man for the Trojans. Scott’s last head coaching stint was with the Richmond Spiders in 2010, where he resigned after one season following a DWI arrest.

“Our goal coming into the spring was to make sure we were better at the end than we were at the beginning,” Scott said after the game Saturday. “The kids have bought into our program, they’ve done things the right way and they’ve gotten better.

“We’re not nearly where we need to be, but we’re taking some steps in the positive direction.”

VSU, which finished 4-6 overall and 3-4 in the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association in 2012, came into the spring with an entirely new coaching staff and aims to solidify the quarterback spot left by three-year starter Jared Battle. Lamonta Green, who overtook Battle early on last season as the starter before a broken tibia on Sept. 22 sidelined him for the rest of the season, took the snaps for the entire scrimmage.

Green, a senior from Compton, completed 26 of his 43 pass attempts and threw two touchdowns.

“He (Green) made some throws today, he did some things very well but he’ll have to make better decisions down the stretch for us to be successful in this league,” Scott said.

In a league dominated by Connell Maynor’s Winston-Salem State offense and its 40.2 points per game average last season, a sound defense will seemingly be critical for every team’s success. Was Scott pleased after his defense won 47-33 over the offense Saturday?

“Not really,” Scott answered when asked if the final score is indicative of where his defense is at. “There were some great plays by the defense but I think we’re right where we need to be.”

Despite Scott saying that the Trojans are still finding their character, his imprint on the program is undeniable. Junior punter Alejandro Diasgranados tweeted, “He’s a great coach and is what Virginia State needed to move into the right direction.”

Sophomore running back Lamont Britt tweeted, “I like him. He’s about business,” and sophomore wide receiver Ja’von Smallwood called him the “best coach I ever had.”

Virginia State opens its season on the road against Fayetteville State on Sept. 7.

The Associated Press today reports that Norfolk State University head men’s basketball coach Anthony Evans has resigned, and will likely accept the same position at Florida International University. Norfolk State confirmed the departure in a release today, but no formal announcement of Evans’ destination has been made by the university, or confirmed by Florida International.

“The University community has been well-served by the diligence and success of Coach Anthony Evans,” said Norfolk State president Dr. Tony Atwater. “I admire his commitment to students’ academic success and superior athletic performance.  I wish him well in his new head coaching assignment.”

In six years, Evans was 99-94 overall with the Spartans. He led the program to a MEAC conference title in 2012 and opening round win over Missouri in the national men’s basketball championship tournament, just the third team in MEAC history to accomplish the feat as a 15 seed. The Spartans also won the 2013 MEAC regular season men’s basketball title with a perfect 16-0, and secured a berth in the National Invitation

The Daily Press today reports that Virginia Governor Bob McDonnell is seeking $1 million in the 2014 state budget to support the Hampton University Proton Therapy Institute, the largest free standing cancer treatment center in the world.

In his letter to the General Assembly, McDonnell said, “The additional funding will support the institute in its efforts to treat cancerous tumors with fewer side effects through proton beam therapy. This will provide an improvement to the quality of health for some of our citizens and it also will support economic development in the Hampton area.”

According to the Press, the HUPTI has received more than $3.5 million in support from the City of Hampton and State of Virginia since its opening in 2010. The institute annually treats more than 2,000 cancer patients from the US and around the world.

Henrico County Police Look to Virginia Union, Area Colleges for New Officers

Written by , Posted in Crime, Virginia, Virginia Union University

url-17

The Richmond Times-Dispatch today reports on an effort by Henrico County Police to stem a slight uptick in area crime. As aggravated assaults and larcenies have increased in the region, the department is reaching out to Virginia Union University and other area schools to increase the recruitment of minority and female officers.

This month, the police division met with Virginia Union University to establish a recruiting relationship with the school, and (Henrico Police Chief Douglas) Middleton has contacted several other universities for the same purpose.

In January, the division published a classified ad for a presentation geared toward women. More than 50 women showed up for the event on Jan. 8, and the division plans to hold similar presentations in the future.

“Obviously, our crime-fighting abilities are directly tied to our ability to get qualified applicants,” Middleton said.

NCAA Disrespects Norfolk State, Prairie View with Postseason Tournament Seedings

Written by , Posted in Norfolk State University, Prairie View A&M University, Sports, Texas, Virginia

MZAXTGQYVLTXHGO.20130316210819-1

As if HBCUs didn’t have a hard enough time keeping talent at home and away from PWIs, seedings for two black college basketball champions in NCAA post-season tournaments are making the run at local talent much harder.

Norfolk State University will face Virginia in the opening round of the men’s National Invitational Tournament tomorrow night in Charlottesville. The MEAC regular season champions fell in their opening game of the MEAC men’s basketball tournament to Bethune-Cookman last week, opening the door for one of the NCAA’s signature backhanded slaps to black college athletics – putting an HBCU in a bracket or an opening round game against a predominantly white regional counterpart.

This isn’t the first time for Norfolk State – when the Spartans won the 2011 MEAC football title, their opening round opponent was cross-town PWI Old Dominion.

Prairie View A&M’s Lady Panthers won the SWAC women’s tournament last week in an epic four-overtime classic against Mississippi Valley State. Their reward, Brittney Griner and the defending national champion Baylor Lady Bears.

PVAMU, a certifiable women’s basketball dynasty with its third consecutive conference championship, draws perhaps the greatest player in women’s college basketball history, with the game to be played in Waco. Coincidentally, this will be the second time in three years PVAMU opens against Griner-led Baylor.

Maybe the NCAA should just put out a notice to the MEAC and SWAC – “get your plane tickets and head to the closest PWI that draws a top seed in the tournament, because that’s where you and the best high school athletes deciding between an HBCU and a mid-major PWI are headed.”

But it could be worse – the NCAA could have resorted to it most devious and most common move of forcing the two HBCU conference winners to face each other in a play-in game.

Twitter Reacts to Bethune-Cookman Upset of Norfolk State in MEAC Tournament

Written by , Posted in Bethune-Cookman University, Florida, MEAC Basketball Tournament, Norfolk State University, Sports, Virginia

norfolk-state-anthony-evans-526f2e9b1cfd23e3

More details coming later from reporting news outlets, but the headline you need to know is that Norfolk State University, the top seed in the men’s MEAC Basketball Tournament and only undefeated team in conference play this year, was defeated by Bethune-Cookman University 70-68 in overtime this afternoon in the Norfolk Scope.

Questions loom about what this means for the tournament’s attendance, the conference’s seeding in the national tournament, and North Carolina Central University emerging as the new favorite to win the tournament in just its second year of MEAC membership. But for now, let us hearken to the voices of HBCU Twitter.

The Case for NCCU as the Best Team in the MEAC

Written by , Posted in Norfolk State University, North Carolina, North Carolina Central University, Sports, Virginia

That is because North Carolina Central is the best team statistically in the league. The Eagles, who are 11-1 after a loss to Savannah State, own the best score in the Pomeroy ratings, in the MRI, and in the Sagarin numbers. The first two have Central in the 130s which is a better spot than either ranking gives to Northeastern, a team that clinched a share of its regular season conference title Wednesday night.

But because North Carolina Central has a loss, the league’s face is Norfolk State.
