Virginia State Names Latrell Scott New Head Football Coach

Virginia State University yesterday named Latrell Scott as its new head football coach. Scott is the former head coach of the University of Richmond, and comes to VSU from James Madison University, where he coached tight ends.

VSU President Keith T. Miller said he was impressed with Scott’s goals for the team, both athletically and academically. “We’re delighted to have Coach Scott as a Trojan,” he said. “We’re ready to embrace what he wants to do with our football program.”

Scott was an all-America tight end at Hampton University, and won two MEAC football championships as a player. According to the university’s release, Scott contributed as a position coach to the 2007 Richmond team which won a school-record 11 wins and made the school’s first ever appearance in the National Semifinals.

NCAA Rule Cancels Norfolk State-Va. State Labor Day Classic

An NCAA rule about early season non-conference competition has forced the cancellation of the annual Labor Day Football Classic between Norfolk State University and Virginia State University. From the Virginian-Pilot:

When going over Virginia State’s upcoming schedule with then-head coach Anthony Faison in November, Davis said, they recognized the scheduled games were in violation of an NCAA bylaw. The rule prohibits a Division II team from “playing its first contest with outside competition before the Thursday preceding September 6.” The Saturday games between the schools were scheduled for Aug. 31, 2013, and Aug. 30, 2014.

Both schools hope to resume the classic as soon as early as 2016.

Virginia State Awarded $1.4 Million to Increase Secondary Math Proficiency

The National Science Foundation has awarded a five year, $1.45 million grant to Virginia State University for the project Central Virginia Undergraduate Mathematics Scholarship Program (CVUMSP). The grant will help VSU and its educational partners identify, recruit, prepare, produce and maintain a positive impact on 41 highly-qualified, local secondary mathematics teachers over the grant period.

Virginia State Receives $300K Grant to Combat Domestic Violence

The U.S. Department of Justice Office on Violence against Women has awarded Virginia State University a three year, $298,437 grant to fund programs designed to reduce domestic violence, dating violence, sexual assault, and stalking on campus. VSU is one of only 22 projects selected for funding in FY 2012.

First Lady Michelle Obama to Campaign at Virginia State

First Lady Michelle Obama will be at VSU on Friday for a campaign event on this Friday, November 2nd. The event will be held at the Daniel Gymnasium on VSU’s campus, and doors open for the event at 3:00 PM.

The event is open to the public, but tickets are required. Tickets will be available on campus at the Daniel Gymnasium box office from 10am to 9pm on Wednesday and Thursday.

The Obama campaign is also making tickets available at three additional local offices beginning at 9am on Wednesday:

Petersburg (612 South Sycamore Street)
Chester (15714 Jefferson Davis Highway)
Midlothian (713 North Courthouse Road)

All tickets are provided on a first-come, first-served basis.

Former Virginia State Student Files $1.7 Million Hazing Lawsuit Against Phi Beta Sigma

Former Virginia State University student Christopher Rudder says that between 2008 and 2009, he endured physical and mental abuse while pledging for the campus’ chapter of Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity Inc. He now has filed a $1.7 million suit against the national fraternity and the chapter for compensatory and punitive damages, just two years after the fraternity settled a suit brought after the hazing death of a Prairie View A&M student. Virginia State Wins ‘People’s Choice’ Regional Award in National Choir Competition

The Virginia State University Gospel Chorale was recently dubbed the regional ‘People’s Choice’ winner of Verizon’s national “How Sweet the Sound” gospel competition. The Chorale won $5,000 for its performance in the Verizon Center in Washington D.C. last Wednesday.

VSU was the only HBCU participant in the regional competition.

Saint Paul’s President Eddie Moore Retires

Citing the need for a delayed medical procedure, Saint Paul’s College yesterday announced the retirement of President Eddie Moore, and the appointment of SPC Chief of Staff Claud Flythe as interim president. Moore is regarded as the chief fundraiser and strategist behind Saint Paul’s efforts to earn accreditation reaffirmation from the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools, a bid that fell short last week.

Virginia State Earns Two Emmy Awards; First in University’s History

Virginia State University recently earned two Emmy awards from the National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences – National Capital Chesapeake Bay Chapter. They are the first Emmys in the university’s history, and were earned for the school’s newsmagazine, VSU Today, and it’s ‘Building a Better World’ commercial campaign.
