West Va. State Wins National Broadcasting Society Chapter of the Year

Students from West Virginia State University’s chapter of the National Broadcasting Society – Alpha Epsilon Rho recently accepted the award for national chapter of the year at the society’s annual meeting last week in Washington D.C. It is the highest chapter honor presented by the 70-year-old organization.

“We are so proud of our students for their accomplishments recognized at this year’s national convention,” said Assistant Professor Sherri Shafer, who along with Kim Cobb serves as co-advisor to the campus chapter. “It shows the hard working attitude of our students, their creativity and dedication to their craft.”

NBS-AERho is comprised of students with career interests in media and communications. Two years ago, the WVSU chapter was recognized as the ‘Rookie Chapter of the Year.’

VIDEO – West Virginia State Leaves WVIAC; Will Be Founding Member of Mountain East Conference

West Virginia State University is one of nine schools that will leave the West Virginia Intercollegiate Athletic Conference and form the new Mountain East Conference. The new conference will offer 16 varsity sports, and will seek approval as an NCAA Division II conference.

No word on the status of Bluefield State College, which now stands as an athletic independent.

Leadership Shake Up at West Virginia State

Two vice-presidents from West Virginia State University are out, the school confirmed yesterday afternoon. Dr. John Berry and Bryce Casto will not be retained under new president Dr. Brian Hemphill,who assumed the presidency on July 1.

As of Thursday afternoon, the university website still listed Berry as vice president of institutional advancement and Casto as vice president of student affairs.

Berry had served in that role since 2010, according to a university press release.

Casto said he had held his position for about 12 years. He was the university’s athletic director for four years before that and formerly coached football at South Charleston High School.

West Virginia State Leaves WVIAC, Bluefield State Remains

Nine schools, including West Virginia State University, have announced their departure from the West Virginia Intercollegiate Athletic Conference to start a regionally-based all sports conference. Bluefield State College, one of the six teams remaining in the WVIAC, has made no comment or commitment to joining the new conference.
