Winston-Salem State Cuts Men’s Track and Field, Golf

Written by , Posted in Headlines, Sports, Winston-Salem State University

Winston-Salem State University today announced that men’s indoor and outdoor track and field and men’s golf will be cut from its athletic offerings beginning Fall 2012. Calling the move part of a restructuring initiative to make other WSSU sports nationally competitive, the school is seeking waivers for the athletes whom will lose scholarships as a result of the cuts.

“We have been trying to support 16 sports when the NCAA only requires that we field 10 teams,” (Winston-Salem State Athletic Director William) Hayes explained. “If we want to be a DII national contender, then we need to focus our efforts on getting better at the things we do best.” (WFMY)
