Florida A&M and North Carolina A&T have ranked among US News and World Report’s annual ‘Most Popular Colleges and Universities’ list. The list is compiled by the yield of students who enroll in a university after being accepted.

FAMU ranks 14th on the national list, while NCA&T ranks 20th. They are the only two HBCUs to rank in the top 50. Bowie State, Tennessee State and Morgan State also made the top 150 schools.

Among the liberal arts colleges, Savannah State University was ranked the fourth most popular, placing behind three military academies. Officials attribute the popularity and high conversion rate of applicants to enrollees to a focus on the state of Georgia.

Savannah State, whose rank is not published in U.S. News’s 2012 rankings of National Liberal Arts Colleges, credits its change in recruiting practices for its position on the list. “One of the things we’ve done is just focused on Georgia,” says Timothy Cranford, executive director of enrollment services at the university. “In the past, we’ve done recruitment all over the nation, but we’ve really focused in on our in-state residents.” (US News and World Report)

Morehouse, Xavier of Louisiana, Lane, Claflin, Talladega and Dillard also made the top 150 liberal arts list.
