Regional fire officials are still gathering information on what started a fire at a University of Maryland Eastern Shore greenhouse on Sunday afternoon. University officials say that the fire destroyed much of the facility, which the school leases to the Beijing-based Jet Green Group.
“We’re very fortunate there were no injuries,” said Ronnie Holden, vice president for administrative affairs at UMES. “We want to thank all those volunteer firefighters who came so quickly and put out the fire. It’s impressive to watch them do their job in such a professional and efficient manner.”
A UMES spokesperson estimated that damage to the greenhouse may cost $6 million to restore the greenhouse.
