Written by , Posted in CIAA, Leadership, Sports

The Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association today named Hampton University alumna Jacqie Carpenter commissioner, making her the first black female appointed to the position in the conference’s 100-year history.

Carpenter was a two-sport athlete (volleyball, basketball) at Hampton, and was a member of the Pirates’ 1988 Division II national women’s basketball championship team. Carpenter is the former director of the Division I national women’s basketball championship tournament, and served in a variety of capacities with the NCAA over nine years.

“The CIAA Board of Directors is pleased to welcome Jacqie Carpenter as our new Commissioner.  She is a very talented athletics leader who brings rich and varied experience and skills from years at the NCAA.  We welcome her tremendous enthusiasm for the future of the CIAA. These are the principal reasons that the Board chose her to lead our conference to a higher level of excellence” said Dr. Mickey L. Burnim, Chairman of the Board of Directors.
