Hampton President Gives Behind-the-Scenes Look at NCAA Executive Committee Decision on Penn State

Written by , Posted in Hampton University, Leadership, Sports, Virginia

Hampton University President William Harvey today commented for the first time on the NCAA Executive Committee’s sanctions against Penn State University. Dr. Harvey, who sits on the committee and the Division I Board of Directors, told the Daily Press that the sanctions were appropriate for the criminal nature of case, and its cover-up by high-ranking PSU officials.

“We thought that this was one of the most egregious things that some of us have ever heard of,” Harvey said. “The NCAA mandates institutional control. … The NCAA mandates that presidents must oversee athletics.

“We wanted to send a message, and we hope that this sends a message that every president take a gut-check on the proper balance between sports and academics. Coaches must adhere to the values of honesty and integrity of any institution. This isn’t something they can get around. They must act in the best interest of the institution and not of their sport, or even themselves.”
