JCSU Receives $975,000 Grant to Expand Arts Education

Johnson C. Smith University last month received a $975,000 grant to expand academic and training opportunities in its Department of Visual, Performing and Communication Arts.

The grant, awarded by the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation, will fund hiring new faculty in graphic art, theater and dance, and will contribute to the addition of a bachelor’s of arts degree in dance.

The grant will be awarded over three years from the foundation, and will also support a faculty development program for new media research and training, and an arts-centered lecture series.
