Louisiana Regent: Southern’s Performance “Shockingly” Good in Face of Budget Cuts

Written by , Posted in Finance, Louisiana, Southern University System

The Finance Chairman of the Louisiana Board of Regents recently called the performance of the Southern University System “shockingly” good in the face of massive state cuts. The comment came as the SUS, along with other systems in the state, produced their budgets for the 2013 fiscal year at the Regents’ annual meeting yesterday.

Southern System President Ronald Mason said the goal is for the university to transform itself into a new kind of institution by focusing on the most popular degree programs and attracting larger numbers of students through online education offerings.

The Southern University System has cut more than 150 jobs over the last six months. The SUS budget is $130 million, more than $160 million less than the budget for the Louisiana Community and Technical College System, its next closest system counterpart in the state.
