The Paine College Department of Athletics announced Tuesday the return of its football team after a 51 year hiatus.
The team will play four club games in 2013 at Lucy C. Laney Memorial Stadium, home of the Lucy C. Laney high school and Augusta City Classic games. The first game will be Oct. 12 agains Georgia Prep Academy.
“There are four great games ahead of us this season,” said head football coach Gregory Ruffin in a statement on the school’s website. “These young men have been working hard and we are looking forward to bringing college football back to the area and once again hearing the Lions roar!”
“We are very thankful to the Richmond County Board of Education for working with Dr. Bradley and I to secure a home field for our young men to compete this season,” said athletics director Tim Duncan on the site. “We are excited that our alumni, students and fans will truly be able to enjoy a first class facility like Laney Stadium and all that it has to offer.”
The team will play a full schedule as members of the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC) next year.
