Questions About Security at Paine After On-Campus Rape Allegation

Students at Paine College this morning are questioning campus security measures after a female student reported being raped in a campus dormitory bathroom earlier this morning. From WJBF in Augusta:

Thursday morning around 1:30 a.m., deputies responded to Paine College in reference to a Sexual Assault. Upon arrival, deputies they learned that a female student living in Graham Hall Dormitory was raped in the first floor bathroom of the dorm, by an unknown black male.

The suspect is described as a black male with a dark complexion, bad acne, 5-8″-5’9″ tall, weighing 150-160 pounds, 18-20 years old. He was described as wearing a purple hooded sweatshirt and dark colored pants.

Earlier in the hour, Paine officials released a statement on the alleged incident.

It is regrettable that an alleged rape incident took place on the campus of Paine College on March 7, 2013. Upon notification of the incident, Paine College officials in conjunction with local law enforcement agents immediately took action to investigate the occurrence.

The College has security measures in place to protect students and the College is continuing to work with law enforcement to bring the alleged rapist to justice.

Richmond County Sheriff office is taking the lead in the investigation and more information will be forthcoming as it becomes available.

Some students took to Twitter to express concern for the alleged victim and the campus’ ability to prevent similar problems.
