The family of Howard Baugh, a 1941 Virginia State College alumnus and member of the Tuskegee Airman, hopes that the coming release of ‘Red Tails’ will help spur their efforts to have a statue built in Baugh’s honor in Petersburg. From the Progress-Index:
Baugh was one of the nearly 1,000 black pilots to graduate from Tuskegee Army Air Field between 1940 and 1946. He was commissioned as a second lieutenant in November 1942. He was later assigned to the 99th Fighter Squadron in Sicily.
“It was scary,” Baugh said of the combat flying experience in a 2004 interview. “It all depended on what we were doing as to how scary it was, but it was really scary when we were getting shot at.”
They, along with the region’s Howard Baugh chapter of the Tuskegee Airman Inc. will be on hand for a screening of the biopic in Colonial Heights, VA this Friday.
