Scott Cuts Funding for FAMU Mosquito Research Center

Gov. Rick Scott’s veto may mean the end for a 46-year-old mosquito research program and could send 18 more local residents to the unemployment line.

Scott vetoed $500,000 that was to be used to fund the Florida A&M University Public Health Entomology Research and Education Center in Bay County. For decades the center has done research and helped mosquito control officials come up with innovative ways to deal with Florida’s mosquito problem, said Dr. John Smith, the director of the center and a professor of entomology with FAMU.
