Southern Board Rejects Chancellor’s Pick for New Athletic Director

Written by , Posted in Headlines, Leadership, Southern University, Sports

The Southern University Board of Supervisors today voted against SUBR Chancellor James Llorens selection for a new athletic director, opting to extend the contract of interim director Sandy Pugh until a permanent replacement can be hired.

Dr. Llorens recommended Paula Jackson, a Southern alumna and current Assistant Director of Athletics for Compliance & Senior Woman Administrator at Alabama State.

“We want to support the chancellor except in this situation with the athletic department,” Board Member Patric Bell says. “It’s in such a state that we need somebody who is very, very strong to come in and steer the ship right and some of us didn’t feel as though Ms. Jackson had the experience.” (WAFB.com)

Jackson previously served in associate AD positions at Clark Atlanta, Savannah State and Mississippi Valley State, with most of her experience in compliance. She is also the former athletic director at Lincoln University of Missouri.
