Southern University today announced an extension agreement in principle with head football coach Dawson Odums that will keep him in Baton Rouge through 2017. The agreement, slated for approval from the Southern Board of Trustees in January 2014, will pay Odums $175,000 annually.
“I’m pleased to extend this offer to Coach Odums as a commitment to continued student-athlete success at Southern,” said (Southern University Athletic Director Dr. William) Broussard. “We look forward to continuing to win and win the right way with him at the helm of the program.”
Odums led the Jaguars to this year’s SWAC football champion with a 34-27 double overtime victory over rival Jackson State. The announcement comes just one day after Jackson State fired head football coach Rick Comegy, and one week after Odums’ name surfaced in reports as a finalist for the head coaching position at North Carolina Central University, his alma mater.
