Alpha Kappa Alpha Accused of Witness Tampering in Howard Chapter Lawsuit

The Washington City Paper today reports that the judge in the lawsuit against Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Inc. has reprimanded the organization for tampering with potential witnesses. According to the Paper, the organization allegedly revoked membership privileges for the mothers of the two litigants in the lawsuit, Laurin Compton and Lauren Cofield. This action allegedly provoked witnesses from cooperating with the court, and dissuaded Compton’s mother from attending a hearing. From the report:

In an opinion released Thursday, Judge Rosemary Collyer slammed the tampering as “deplorable” and “supercilious.” Collyer decided not to sanction the sorority for the tampering, but that didn’t depress their outspoken attorney, J. Wyndal Gordon.

The Washington City Paper today files from Georgia Avenue, where two students at Howard University have filed a lawsuit against Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Inc., and have named Howard University as a defendant, for alleged hazing and complicit allowance of hazing. From the City Paper:

Some of the “hazing” rules sound innocuous, if extensive, like being forbidden from wearing the sorority colors of pink and green or any colors that could be blended into pink and green. In one humorous moment, the lawsuit notes that the pledges, who were called the “sweets,” couldn’t even wear white pearls.

Other hazing allegations are more serious. At one point, the pledges were told not to talk to non-sorority members at Howard, according to the suit.  “[Alpha Kappa Alpha members] on campus addressed the sweets by calling them weak bitches,” Compton’s mother wrote in a complaint to the sorority.

MiAKA – Alpha Kappa Alpha Lawsuit Rumor Should Spur New Look at LGBT Inclusion at HBCUs

Written by , Posted in Community

Multiple national media sources are citing kollegekidd.com and its report that Men Interested in Alpha Kappa Alpha (MiAKA) are considering filing a gender discrimination lawsuit against Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Incorporated.

While largely unsubstantiated, this rumor turns up the burner on the simmering discussion about homosexuality on the HBCU campus. From the ‘Plastics’ at Morehouse to gay and lesbian organizations finding support and acceptance on campus, HBCUs have an extraordinary branding problem when it comes to positive relationships with LGBT students and faculty at our schools.
