Walter Kimbrough: Why Didn’t Dr. Dre Give $35 Million to an HBCU?

Written by , Posted in Dillard University, Dr. Walter Kimbrough, Louisiana

Still, what if Dre had given $35 million — his half of the USC gift and about 10% of his wealth, according to a Forbes estimate — to an institution that enrolls the very people who supported his career from the beginning? An institution where the majority of students are low-income? A place where $35 million would represent a truly transformational gift? Why didn't Dr. Dre give it to a black college?

Walter Kimbrough on Alabama State: Fair or Foul?

Written by , Posted in Dr. Walter Kimbrough, Editorial, Leadership

wmk202-20122

As a private citizen, Dillard University President Dr. Walter Kimbrough has every right and a level of responsibility to comment on public matters, particularly those within HBCU culture. As an esteemed leader within the culture, Dr. Kimbrough has a voice, expertise and perspective that few, even among his presidential peers, can claim.

So when the question is asked about the fairness and timing of his recent editorial in the Montgomery Advertiser on Alabama State University’s leadership shake up, there are two angles to which we should consider his piece. One angle is the opinion of someone who is a personal advocate for historically black colleges, and the other is a nuanced view of how president-board relationships work from the mind of a sitting HBCU president and consultant to several boards and presidential searches.

We are all entitled to opinions, but Dr. Kimbrough offers a surface understanding and perspective on the short and long-term effects of Joseph Silver’s separation from the university.

Dillard President Walter Kimbrough on Alabama State Controversy

Written by , Posted in Alabama, Alabama State University, Leadership

As things stand today, there is absolutely no way I would recommend anyone to seek the presidency of Alabama State University. In fact, it could be career suicide. Any time you watch a board take seemingly arbitrary actions, with the students, faculty, staff and alumni rallying together asking for answers and this same board ignoring them, it is troubling, to say the least.

Philander Smith Names Alumnus Johnny Moore as President

Written by , Posted in Alumni, Arkansas, Headlines, Leadership, Philander Smith College

[mpoverlay]Philander Smith College today announced Johnny Moore as its new president. Dr. Moore, a Philander alumnus, leaves Tyler Junior College and his post as its executive vice-president of student affairs.

Bob Birch, Board of Trustees chair said the board utilized a very comprehensive process, which included a national search firm to assist along with a search committee comprised of all stakeholder groups – alumni, faculty, administrators, donors and students.

“From that process, several extremely qualified candidates were presented and interviewed.  However, the unanimous choice by the search committee and the board was Dr. Moore.  Being an alumnus of the college was a factor, but we are also very impressed with his vast background and success in almost every aspect of higher education,” said Birch.   “We feel confident Dr. Moore will make a very positive impact with Philander’s continued pursuits of excellence for the institution and our students.”

Dr. Moore replaces Dr. Walter Kimbrough, who will assume the presidency at Dillard University this summer.[/mpoverlay]
