Hampton President Gives Behind-the-Scenes Look at NCAA Executive Committee Decision on Penn State

Written by , Posted in Hampton University, Leadership, Sports, Virginia

Hampton University President William Harvey today commented for the first time on the NCAA Executive Committee’s sanctions against Penn State University. Dr. Harvey, who sits on the committee and the Division I Board of Directors, told the Daily Press that the sanctions were appropriate for the criminal nature of case, and its cover-up by high-ranking PSU officials.

“We thought that this was one of the most egregious things that some of us have ever heard of,” Harvey said. “The NCAA mandates institutional control. … The NCAA mandates that presidents must oversee athletics.

“We wanted to send a message, and we hope that this sends a message that every president take a gut-check on the proper balance between sports and academics. Coaches must adhere to the values of honesty and integrity of any institution. This isn’t something they can get around. They must act in the best interest of the institution and not of their sport, or even themselves.”

Hampton President William Harvey Presses NCAA for More Academic Support Funding to HBCU Athletics

[mpoverlay]Diverse Issues in Higher Education today reports that the NCAA will tomorrow consider ways to bolster academic achievement of student athletes at HBCUs. The measure comes just weeks after Jackson State football was again banned from post-season competition, and faces possible expulsion from the NCAA for poor academic performance.

The issue is being largely promoted by Hampton University President William Harvey, who advocates the NCAA’s recently raised academic progress rating standards, but says that financial support should match the new institutional performance benchmarks.

Harvey says he knows his support of higher standards is not widely embraced by other HBCU presidents and athletic directors. The push to raise standards has gained steam however, he says, and HBCUs need to figure a way to deal with the new reality.

“The train has left the station and what we need to do is get on board and get more funds from the NCAA if we are to meet their standards,” says Harvey, noting that HBCUs historically have had a high number of academic underachievers in some of their key sports, particularly football.[/mpoverlay]
