Black- Owned Book Publishing Company to Donate 50% of Profits to Scholarships for HBCU Students

Written by , Posted in Funding

In commemoration with the dedication of the Martin Luther King memorial, ATuskegeeAudio.com, an independent book publishing company, will donate 50% of its profits to send students to Historically Black Colleges (HBCUs).

The ever rising cost of higher education is an ongoing problem parents and students face each year. It is the goal of the web site to help ease the burden for those who could otherwise not afford the high cost of a college education.

While the Pell and Perkins Grants are available to some students these funds are limited. To help try and bridge the gap in this ongoing problem, ATuskegeeaudio.com pledges to offer scholarships to those students who qualify. These scholarships will be offered to undergraduate students no matter their classification.

NC universities eye tuition increases

Written by , Posted in Funding

Public universities in North Carolina are looking to recoup money lost to deep cuts in state funding by raising tuition – in some cases more than a cap that officials imposed several years ago to keep college affordable.

The 17-campus University of North Carolina system had to reduce spending by $414 million – equivalent to an across-the-board reduction of 15.6 percent – as part of a state budget that closed a $2.6 billion shortfall without a tax increase.

Gift to Shaw Establishes Scholarship in Honor of Vernon Malone

Written by , Posted in Funding, Shaw University

Members of the family of Vernon Malone today presented Shaw University with a check in the amount of $89,680.45 which represents the contributions of family and friends of the late North Carolina State Senator as well as funds that remained in his campaign fund when he died in April 2009.

The funds will be used to establish the Vernon and Susan Malone Endowed Scholarship, which will offer financial support to deserving students within Shaw’s Department of Education.  Malone was an alumnus of Shaw as well as a member of its Board of Trustees.

“Senator Malone was a long-time supporter of Shaw and this act of generosity by his family continues that tradition,” said Shaw President Dr. Dorothy Cowser Yancy.  “We are proud of our association with the Malone family and it is appropriate that we will now have a scholarship within the Department of Education that bears his and his wife’s name.”

As a state senator, Malone was co-chairman of the education committee and appropriations committee for higher education.

Malone spent most of his life as an educator and school administrator before being elected State Senator in 2003.  As school board chairman, he presided over the merger of Raleigh city school and Wake County public schools in 1976.  He also spent more than 20 years as a Wake County commissioner.

Prior to that, Malone worked as a classroom teacher and as a school administrator and then became a superintendent for the Governor Morehead School for the Blind in Raleigh.

Inspire Scholarship Spurs Record Enrollment at Delaware State

Written by , Posted in Delaware, Delaware State University, Funding

A year ago, freshman Alexis Hunt contemplated other colleges.

But she decided on Delaware State University because she liked the campus and wanted to try out for the marching band. One more factor tipped the scales: DSU awarded her an Inspire Scholarship.

“That’s free money,” she said. “It’s a good opportunity.”

Thanks to a surge of in-state freshmen such as Hunt, 18, of Laurel, along with efforts to reduce dropouts, DSU set an enrollment record this fall for the second straight year. The Dover-based school now has 4,179 students, up from 3,819 the previous year.
