Rarely will you see historically black colleges gracing the pages of online gossip rag TMZ, but in this case, it appears to be a wonderful exception. TMZ is reporting that Spelman College is actively recruiting US Olympic gold medal winner Gabby Douglas, with SC President Beverly Daniel Tatum having flown to London to personally extend congratulations to the champ. From a statement released to TMZ:

“A young woman who has demonstrated the drive and discipline needed to achieve world-class excellence is likely to have what it takes to be successful at Spelman, and we would welcome her interest in the college.”

How many HBCU presidents have the vision to get on a plane to go recruit a history-making Black Olympian? Probably four, including Dr. Tatum. Given Douglas’ very public embrace of the racial politics and cultural criticisms coming against her from our own people, Spelman would be the ideal place for her to learn and grow as a scholar and national ambassador.
