The Hampton University Program for the Retention and Enrichment of Successful Students (PRESS) and Groupon Grassroots, the philanthropic arm of Groupon, announced the launch of a local campaign to motivate local high school students to consider college attendance.
The Take a Kid to College Campaign will be available on Hampton’s Groupon Grassroots page beginning on Monday, May 7th and running through Sunday, May 13th. Utilizing Groupon Grassroots’ collective action model, GROUPON subscribers can pledge support for the Take a Kid to College initiative in increments of $5, with each $50 providing sponsorship for one high school student to engage in a full day of activities with a college mentor.
PRESS Students, who are the first in their families to attend college, will expose high school students with similar backgrounds to campus life. Students will be given the opportunity to participate in a community service project, visit dormitories, accompany their peer mentor to classes and experience greek life on campus. The day will culminate in a workshop tackling topics such as preparing for college admission, how to obtain scholarships and other financial assistance, and maintaining academic/social balance.
