Written by , Posted in Morehouse College, North Carolina

The Downtown Sports Bar and Grill in Raleigh, NC is at the center of a heated controversy stemming from racial discrimination allegations from a Morehouse College alum Jonathan Wall. Yesterday, the Digest posted on the initial blog post from Wall courtesy of North Carolina Central professor Philip Christman. The story also ran on the Gawker network courtesy of Jezebel. Since then, legal counsel for the bar has maintained that the employee didn’t act in a discriminatory way towards Wall, because he was in the facility without being a “member,” and that membership is “a part of their liquor license with the ABC Commission.”

Morehouse College Junior Jonathan Wall was recently named one of four national ‘heroes’ by Allstate for its second annual ‘Give Back Day’ program. The recognition is given to community activists displaying volunteerism and leadership.

In the fall of 2008, Morehouse College student Jon Wall, 20, volunteered to judge an elementary/junior high school math and debate competition in Atlanta. Among the top 40 students, only three were African American. Shaken at the state of the educational system and looking for reform, Wall wrote a Facebook wall post stating “Something’s Gotta Give.” The post went to his sociology professor and was then printed in the Atlanta Journal-Constitution. The post led former civil rights activist Lonnie King to invite Wall to help start the Peachtree Hope Charter School, making him the youngest member of its board. Two years later, the school opened with Wall helping re-zone the school and leading marketing and recruiting efforts.
