Miles College recently announced acclaimed actress Bern Nadette Stanis as its Artist in Residence for 2013. Stanis, popular for her role as Thelma on the 70′s sitcom ‘Good Times,’ will teach master classes in acting and improvisation at the Birmingham HBCU until December.

“Everyone here has pride in the school,” she told AL.com in October. “They want excellence, I see excellence. The spirit of the school is so beautiful. I want to do as much as I can to help.”

Stanis replaces Robin Givens, who served as the college’s inaugural artist in residence last year.

Two Alabama HBCUs will strengthen entrepreneurship development among students and alumni through partnerships with the U.S. Small Business Administration, the agency today announced. Miles College and Lawson State Community College will offer resources, training and information on business-building programs and financing opportunities through the SBA.

“A critical goal of the SBA is to connect with organizations and institutions that share a common purpose of helping people get into business, grow and succeed,” said SBA Regional Administrator Cassius Butts.

Both schools will partner with the SBA for two years, and the agency is looking to pilot programs at other HBCUs throughout the southeast.

Written by , Posted in Alabama, Community, Headlines, Miles College

[mpoverlay]The parents of murdered Florida teenager Trayvon Martin will be panelists at a Miles College community forum on Thursday. The forum will broach conflict resolution without violence in communities and among young people.

Martin’s father, Tracy Martin, and mother, Sybrina Fulton, have been touring the country speaking about the social issues raised by their son’s death, (Miles Dean of Chapel Larry) Batie said.

“We are having a forum on issues facing the youth of today,” Batie said. “We are talking about some of the social issues that led to this incident. We’re not dealing with the aspect of the trial.”  (The Birmingham News)[/mpoverlay]

Written by , Posted in Alabama, Health, Miles College

[mpoverlay]Miles College was among a slate of Alabama colleges and universities profiled in today’s Birmingham News for steps the schools are taking to combat smoking. Miles has gained local acclaim for barring tobacco advertising and event sponsorship from its campus.

“It would be a dream to have a completely smoke-free campus, where once you cross into the gates there would be no smoking at all,” said Griena Knight Davis, dean of student affairs at Miles. “We’re taking small steps right now.” (Birmingham News)[/mpoverlay]
