Ramon Harewood, a three-time all-SIAC lineman out of Morehouse College, was taken by the Baltimore Ravens in the sixth round of the 2010 NFL Draft. The 6’7″, 360 pound behemoth was selected with the 194th overall pick, and was the first HBCU player drafted. From his NFL.com preview:
Harewood?’s a huge prospect born in Barbados and has only four years of playing experience but made 30 starts at a lower level of competition in college. A high-upside, boom-or-bust prospect who needs loads of work and polish with his run and pass blocking before he?ll be ready to contribute in the NFL. Potential late-round selection.
Harewood was highly-regarded out of Morehouse for his size and intelligence. While he may not deliver an immediate impact for the Ravens, his selection is the latest of a growing trend to draft HBCU players with a world of upside, and the smarts to be coached up at the next level.

Gargantuan offensive tackle and the pride of Morehouse College Ramon Harewood has made Sports Illustrated’s “Wes Welker Watch List,” a list of the top under-the-radar NFL Draft prospects from small schools or limited roles in larger programs. Here’s Harewood’s rundown.
NFL personnel men love Harewood’s massive 6-foot-7, 355-pound frame, and the native of Barbados is a physics and engineering major who wows scouts with his blend of intelligence and physicality. NFL types don’t always make it to Morehouse’s pro day, but almost 20 teams were represented this year, and they were all there to check out a prospect who projects to either the seventh round or priority free-agent.
Sammie Lee Hill, a Stillman College product who also was regarded as a project, went in the fourth round to the Detroit Lions and has made himself into a valuable player for an improving roster. Harewood could emerge into the same kind of player, with the same kind of immediate impact for a franchise.
