Spelman Recruiting Olympic Gold Medalist Gabby Douglas

Written by , Posted in Georgia, Spelman College, Sports

Rarely will you see historically black colleges gracing the pages of online gossip rag TMZ, but in this case, it appears to be a wonderful exception. TMZ is reporting that Spelman College is actively recruiting US Olympic gold medal winner Gabby Douglas, with SC President Beverly Daniel Tatum having flown to London to personally extend congratulations to the champ. From a statement released to TMZ:

“A young woman who has demonstrated the drive and discipline needed to achieve world-class excellence is likely to have what it takes to be successful at Spelman, and we would welcome her interest in the college.”

How many HBCU presidents have the vision to get on a plane to go recruit a history-making Black Olympian? Probably four, including Dr. Tatum. Given Douglas’ very public embrace of the racial politics and cultural criticisms coming against her from our own people, Spelman would be the ideal place for her to learn and grow as a scholar and national ambassador.

Spelman sisters stay winning.

The victims, three females and two males, told police that the robbers were holding hands and walking behind them at the park. When the robbers got closer, they dropped their hands and pulled out guns.

“They told them to remove their clothes and (the robbers) left with their clothes,” Atlanta Police Capt. Adam Lee said. “They also ordered them to jump into the pond, which is at (the park), so they all got wet.” (WSBTV.com)[/mpoverlay]

HBCUs Commended on Federal Blog About HIV/AIDS Prevention Strategies

Written by , Posted in Clark-Atlanta University, Fort Valley State University, Georgia, Headlines, Health, Jackson State University, Louisiana, Mississippi, Morehouse College, North Carolina, North Carolina Central University

[mpoverlay]Several HBCUs, including Morehouse College, Clark Atlanta University, Spelman College, Southern University – Baton Rouge, North Carolina Central University, Fort Valley State University and Jackson State University, were commended in a recent entry on the federal HIV/AIDS blog.

The author, Senior Policy Advisor in the Office of HIV/AIDS in the Department of Health and Human Services, said that historically black colleges are leading the way in addressing prevention and treatment of HIV/AIDS for African-American communities.

A number of Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) are engaged in significant efforts to educate students and promote HIV awareness across their campuses. These efforts are particularly important given that African Americans face a very severe and disproportionate burden of HIV disease in the United States. Despite representing only 14% of the US population in 2009, African Americans accounted for 44% of all new HIV infections in that year, according to the CDC.

Alarmingly, CDC also reports that more new HIV infections occurred among 13–29 year-old black gay and bisexual men who have sex with men (MSM) than any other age and racial group of MSM; further, new HIV infections among young black MSM are trending up, increasing by 48% from 2006–2009. Of the total number of new HIV infections in U.S. women in 2009, 57% occurred in blacks, and the rate of new HIV infections among black women in 2009 was 15 times that of white women. These realities make the HIV prevention efforts of the nation’s HBCUs all the more important.[/mpoverlay]

Spelman Students Play Integral Role in MLK Digital Archive Launch

Written by , Posted in Spelman College

The King Center today launched an online digital archive in honor of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., making thousands of images, transcripts and information about the Civil Rights leader available for public viewing  for the first time.

Spelman College students played an integral role in the archiving and presentation of the documents.

Spelman students and alumnae comprise about a third of the individuals involved in the historic project. Johnson says of her experience, “It is exceptionally relevant that the women of Spelman College play such an enormous role with this project considering the King family legacy at Spelman. Dr. King’s funeral was even held in Sisters Chapel on Spelman’s campus.”

For the last six months, Spelman students have worked on the project with a diverse group of people including managers from JPMorgan Chase’s Technology for Social Good program, U.S. military veterans from The Veterans Curation Program, King Center staff, and students from Morehouse College, Emory University and Kennesaw State University.
