Search Underway for New Delaware State Athletic Director

Written by , Posted in Delaware, Delaware State University, Sports

Delaware State University yesterday announced that athletic director Derek Carter will now serve as an assistant to the university’s vice-president of finance. The move prompts the second search for a campus sports CEO in three years.

Eric D. Hart has been appointed interim athletic director until a permanent AD is announced. No timetable has been established for the installation of a new AD, but Delaware State officials say a committee will be assembled and due process will be given to the search in custom with other administrative hirings.

“It’s not something that happens overnight,” says Delaware State spokesperson Carlos Holmes. “It’s still very fresh, so we want to make sure that we conduct a quality search and hope to have an athletic director in place this year.”

Holmes says that Carter’s new position will tap into his financial expertise in athletics, which will be key in the school’s new facilities master plan. Conducted every ten years to assess and schedule for campus expansion, Carter will have planning and budgetary input into the sports portion of the school’s development.

Norfolk State Beats Navy for 10th Win, Best Start Since Joining Division I

Written by , Posted in Norfolk State University, Sports

Norfolk State captured its conference-leading 10th win yesterday afternoon, with a 71-65 road-victory against Navy. The Spartans’ 10-5 overall record is the school’s best start since joining the MEAC in 1997.

In the last three seasons, Norfolk State, which has won three straight, has had to wait until March to notch its 10th win.

“This is a much different feeling than the last couple years when we were scratching and clawing just to try to get to .500,” said O’Quinn, who turned in his nation’s best 10th double-double of the season with 17 points and 11 rebounds.

Stillman’s Junior Galette Stars for New Orleans Saints

Written by , Posted in Sports, Stillman College

10396501-large

Stillman College standout Junior Galette had high expectations as an undrafted free agent signing of the New Orleans Saints in 2010. One of the SIAC’s most dominant defensive players in years, Galette’s size and strength indicated that he would have a major role on the Saint’s defensive rotation and special teams.

But in his second year, Galette is among the team leaders in sacks, and is quickly leaving his signature on important games as the Saints prepare for another Super Bowl run.

From the get-go, this season was different. Galette opened with a tackle for a loss and a half sack in the opener at Green Bay and then got two more sacks in the defensive frenzy New Orleans unleashed late on Bears quarterback Jay Cutler in the second game. Though Galette is less heralded than tight end Jimmy Graham or even cornerback Patrick Robinson, 2010 draft picks flowering in their second year, the image fans had of his potential is becoming a reality.

“I guess the coaches have always told me to ‘catch the learning curve,’ Galette said. “There’s always a learning curve going from year one to year two, especially if you don’t play, and my first year I really didn’t play much. So as the year went on I just kind of got more experienced, and each game you start feeling more comfortable. The guys kind of bring you in, they do such a good job here, it’s such a player-driven team, you don’t want to let your teammates down.” (NOLA.com)

The Times Leader recently profiled Coppin State University standout athlete Jade Dudley, the senior who has emerged as one of the MEAC’s all-time great athletes, and one of the NCAA’s rare three-sport performers.

Dudley (Crestwood) put her name in the record book for her softball play with the Eagles. She ranks second all-time in home runs (16) and her .283 career batting average is 10th all-time. She’s fourth in runs (64), hits (101), doubles (18) and runs batted in (53). She was a first-team Mid-East Athletic Conference choice in 2010.

Dudley played two seasons of volleyball (2008-09) and finished with 291 digs, 136 kills, 37 assists and 32 service aces.

Now, it’s bowling and Dudley has found herself doing the job on the lanes. She recently competed in the MEAC Northern Division Championships and posted a five-game total of 702 with a pair of 199 games in the mix. And, she helped the Eagles defeat Howard in a Baker scoring match for their first league victory in two seasons.

Report: Alcorn State Football Coach Melvin Spears Placed on Administrative Leave

Written by , Posted in Alcorn State University, Mississippi, Sports

Melvin Spears

Ross Dellenger of the Jackson Clarion-Ledger reported earlier today that embattled Alcorn State head football coach Melvin Spears has been placed on administrative leave by the university. The report comes days after Alcorn President M. Christopher Brown told local media that several coaches would be fired due to budget constraints, partly caused by sinking revenues at home games from low attendance.

“Based on what they’re talking about, I’m being terminated for insubordination or something,” Spears said. “I felt blessed to have this great opportunity. Alcorn is my school. … We’ll move on to the next task. … I’ve had a great ride. … It’s always outstanding to come home. Bottom line, we did it the right way.”

Spears’ suspension comes three days after Alcorn president Christopher Brown told The Clarion-Ledger that the coach had a “50-50″ chance of returning for his second year with the squad. Also on Friday, Brown said that “at least three” assistants would be fired and not replaced, citing budget issues. (Clarion-Ledger)

Spears was in the first year of his tenure with Alcorn, and led the Braves to a 2-8 record this season. He also oversaw the departure of quarterback Brandon Bridge, a regularly-mentioned player in the discussion among the SWAC’s best at the position. Spears spent much of the season criticized by Alcorn alumni, who allegedly are pooling money to assist the university in buying out the coach’s contract.

Alcorn spokesperson Clara Stamps said that the decision to place Spears on leave was based upon a recommendation from the Department of Athletics to Dr. Brown, and was made effective this morning.
