SWAC Baseball Champion Prairie View A&M Has Four Named To All-Tournament Team

Fresh off of its 7-4 Southwestern Athletic Conference Championship win over Mississippi Valley State, Prairie View A&M received more good news with four players being named to the SWAC All-Tournament team.

Panthers catcher Evan Richard received his SWAC Tournament MVP award on Sunday, and fittingly he was also named to the All-SWAC team as a catcher. He went 5-for-13 (.385) with three RBIs, three runs scored and six base on balls during the tournament.

Sophomore James Fontenot was named to the All-SWAC team at short stop. Fontenot was only 2-for-14 at the plate, but he drew nine walks, had five runs scored and two stolen bases in the tournament. Fontenot also proved to be one of the more exciting defensive players to watch with a seemingly unlimited range of coverage and the arm to get the put outs at first or turn double plays.

Southern Wins SWAC West Baseball Crown

Written by , Posted in Headlines, Louisiana, Southern University

[mpoverlay]Perryn Keys of the Baton Rouge Advocate today profiles the Southern Jaguars baseball team, winners of the SWAC west division title. While the Jaguars are annual contenders for the conference crown, Keys points to a very specific moment in early April that righted the talent and focus of the team.

March had been a complete disaster. Now, it was the first day of April; they had already lost one of two games at Arkansas-Pine Bluff; and in the series finale, they were circling the drain, down seven runs in the sixth inning against the last-place team in the Western Division.

Wilmy Marrero had seen enough. His senior season was not supposed to crash and burn like this.

In the dugout, with a whopping 28 fans in the stands, Southern’s center fielder challenged his teammates.

Marrero’s verbal outburst didn’t amount to a full-fledged assault, and it didn’t include a lot of dirty words. But let’s put it this way: It’s not entirely suitable for publication in a family newspaper. (The Advocate)[/mpoverlay]

No Word From SWAC After Alabama State, Jackson State Baseball Near Brawl

Written by , Posted in Alabama, Alabama State University, Headlines, Jackson State University, Sports

[mpoverlay]The Southwestern Athletic Conference has yet to issue a statement or discipline in a near-brawl incident between Alabama State University and Jackson State University’s baseball teams last Sunday. Officials called the game in the top of the eighth when both dugouts emptied after two consecutive Hornet pitches at the head of JSU pitcher Desmond Russell, an inning after a ASU player was hit in the jaw by a pitch.

The game took a nasty turn in the bottom half of the inning when ASU’s Manny Rodriguez was hit in the jaw on a pitch from Desmond Russell. Rodriguez was given first base as several Hornets left the dugout area in protest when no warning was issued by home plate umpire Kevin Bradley.

The taunting from the Jackson State dugout continued as Rodriguez was examined by ASU trainer Rachel Waddle and she later convinced Melendez to replace Rodriguez with catcher Richard Gonzalez, fearing Rodriguez’s jaw might have been broken by the pitch. (Montgomery Advertiser)

No timetable has been set by the SWAC office for a disciplinary decision. Jackson State was leading the game 2-1.[/mpoverlay]
