Henrico County Police Look to Virginia Union, Area Colleges for New Officers

Written by , Posted in Crime, Virginia, Virginia Union University

The Richmond Times-Dispatch today reports on an effort by Henrico County Police to stem a slight uptick in area crime. As aggravated assaults and larcenies have increased in the region, the department is reaching out to Virginia Union University and other area schools to increase the recruitment of minority and female officers.

This month, the police division met with Virginia Union University to establish a recruiting relationship with the school, and (Henrico Police Chief Douglas) Middleton has contacted several other universities for the same purpose.

In January, the division published a classified ad for a presentation geared toward women. More than 50 women showed up for the event on Jan. 8, and the division plans to hold similar presentations in the future.

“Obviously, our crime-fighting abilities are directly tied to our ability to get qualified applicants,” Middleton said.

Diverse Issues recently profiled Virginia Union University assistant professor Thomas Hardy, detailing his efforts to bring research opportunities to Union undergraduates in the natural sciences. While a compelling story in itself, the most captivating part of the article was a quote from Dr. Hardy on the turning point in his professional career, thanks to the hands-on approach from a professor at Howard University.

Virginia Union Placed on Accreditation Warning

Written by , Posted in Finance, Virginia, Virginia Union University

The Richmond Times-Dispatch today reports that Virginia Union University has been placed on accreditation warning by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools. The warning, which will be reviewed in December, stems from deficiencies in three areas of finance and management at the university.

The warning specifically points out a lack of control in financial oversight, federal financial aid compliance and review of sponsored research and programs. VUU President Claude Perkins says that the university has hired executive and administrative staff to provide more support to financial and payroll operations.

The university expects removal of the warning in December, in time for the groundbreaking of the school’s $15 million Living and Learning Center.

Former Va. Union Coach Willard Coker Sues University, Says School Wanted “the Next Shaka Smart”

Written by , Posted in Headlines, Sports, Virginia Union University

[mpoverlay]Former Virginia Union University men’s basketball coach Willard Coker filed a lawsuit in Richmond Circuit Court last week against the school, citing a dismissal without cause and the school’s reach to imitate Virginia Commonwealth’s hiring of Shaka Smart to “make a splash” in the local media.  VUU Athletic Director Michael Bailey initially said Coker’s dismissal was  a result of “recruiting issues.”

During that meeting in which Coker was told his contract would not be renewed, Bailey allegedly never mentioned recruiting issues as a reason for the firing. And Coker maintains no such shortfalls existed. Bailey’s mention of such issues at the press conference were allegedly false and used as a way to “distract the public and the press” from the fact that it had no cause or fault on which to fire Coker and to minimize the fact that it was hiring a “relatively inexperienced and essentially untested, but young, new coach.” (Richmond Biz Sense)

Coker was 55-25 in three years as head coach. He replaced CIAA coaching legend Dave Robbins in 2009 after serving as a VUU assistant coach for 23 years. Virginia Union went 15-14 under first year head coach Luqman Jaaber and lost in the opening round of the 2012 CIAA Basketball Tournament.[/mpoverlay]

Virginia Union’s Ben Wallace Ties Southern’s Avery Johnson for Most NBA Games Played by Undrafted Free Agent

Written by , Posted in Alumni, Headlines, Sports

Detroit Pistons center and Virginia Union alum Ben Wallace yesterday tied Southern alum and NBA head coach Avery Johnson for the most NBA games played by an undrafted free agent with 1,054 appearances in his 16-year career.

Wallace was almost unnoticed coming out of high school in Alabama and went to Virginia Union University. There he played two years but wasn’t really blowing anyone’s doors off, averaging 12.5 points and 10.5 rebounds a game. He didn’t bring crazy athleticism or great statistics out of college. But the then Washington Bullets gave him a shot, and he got in 34 games as a rookie.

Wallace never averaged even 10 points a game, but what can do — defend the paint, grab some boards — he does as well as anyone. He is a four-time defensive player of the year and a four-time All-Star. The Pistons don’t win the 2004 NBA crown without him anchoring the middle on one of the best defensive teams ever in the NBA. (ProBasketballTalk.com)

Wallace will likely break the record tomorrow night against the San Antonio Spurs.

Virginia Union Announces Inside-Out Prison Exchange Program; First in State

Written by , Posted in Community, Virginia Union University

Virginia Union University has begun offering the first Inside-Out Prison Exchange Program in Virginia. The program began in the spring semester of 2012 and is being held at the City of Richmond Jail, bringing traditional college students and incarcerated men and women together to learn as peers in the same class room.

The Inside-Out model is a national program founded at Temple University in 1997.  It is currently offered at 121 universities across the country making higher education more available to people who are or have been incarcerated. Participants will explore profound social issues together, building a classroom community based on collaborative learning and sharing. Within the course students will develop class projects that have the potential to make a difference in the real world.

The 15 week class is being taught by Dr. Julie Molloy, chair of the criminology and criminal justice department. “We are very excited about it,” said Molloy.  “The course will be titled ‘Exploring Issues of Crime and Justice’ and we will be reading books such as No Matter How Loud I Shout, Mother California, and Life on the Outside, along with reports published by groups such as The Sentencing Project and the PEW Center on the States.”

Molloy attended certification training in June 2010. The program is open to all criminology and criminal justice majors at the University.
