More than two years after Paul Quinn College made national headlines by converting its unused football field into an organic farm, the Dallas HBCU continues to make positive gains for students with its servant leadership curriculum, and for a community based in a ‘food desert.’

Their biggest fans: the folks who live near the college.

Of everything grown at the farm, 10 percent of the produce is donated to local charities and organizations.

Some of the bounty is served up in the school cafeteria. The rest is taken to local markets or sold to chefs, restaurants and the public. The profit from the sales helps sustain this sustainable farm.

Paul Quinn was named ‘HBCU of the Year’ in 2011 by the Center for Media Advocacy Inc at its inaugural HBCU Awards. School president Michael Sorrell was named ‘President of the Year’ at this year’s event, held on the campus of Bowie State University.
