West Va. State Wins National Broadcasting Society Chapter of the Year

Students from West Virginia State University’s chapter of the National Broadcasting Society – Alpha Epsilon Rho recently accepted the award for national chapter of the year at the society’s annual meeting last week in Washington D.C. It is the highest chapter honor presented by the 70-year-old organization.

“We are so proud of our students for their accomplishments recognized at this year’s national convention,” said Assistant Professor Sherri Shafer, who along with Kim Cobb serves as co-advisor to the campus chapter. “It shows the hard working attitude of our students, their creativity and dedication to their craft.”

NBS-AERho is comprised of students with career interests in media and communications. Two years ago, the WVSU chapter was recognized as the ‘Rookie Chapter of the Year.’

VIDEO – West Virginia State Leaves WVIAC; Will Be Founding Member of Mountain East Conference

West Virginia State University is one of nine schools that will leave the West Virginia Intercollegiate Athletic Conference and form the new Mountain East Conference. The new conference will offer 16 varsity sports, and will seek approval as an NCAA Division II conference.

No word on the status of Bluefield State College, which now stands as an athletic independent.

Leadership Shake Up at West Virginia State

Two vice-presidents from West Virginia State University are out, the school confirmed yesterday afternoon. Dr. John Berry and Bryce Casto will not be retained under new president Dr. Brian Hemphill,who assumed the presidency on July 1.

As of Thursday afternoon, the university website still listed Berry as vice president of institutional advancement and Casto as vice president of student affairs.

Berry had served in that role since 2010, according to a university press release.

Casto said he had held his position for about 12 years. He was the university’s athletic director for four years before that and formerly coached football at South Charleston High School.

West Virginia State Leaves WVIAC, Bluefield State Remains

Nine schools, including West Virginia State University, have announced their departure from the West Virginia Intercollegiate Athletic Conference to start a regionally-based all sports conference. Bluefield State College, one of the six teams remaining in the WVIAC, has made no comment or commitment to joining the new conference.

Brian Hemphill Named President of West Va. State

[mpoverlay]The West Virginia State University Board of Governors today unanimously voted Dr. Brian Hemphill as the school’s next president, an offer he accepted via conference call this afternoon. Dr. Hemphill was chosen over two other finalists, including Dr. Donna Oliver, president of Mississippi Valley State University. 

Dr. Hemphill is currently the vice president of student affairs and enrollment management at Northern Illinois University.

“I’m truly humbled and honored by the offer to become the next president of West Virginia State University,” Hemphill said in a conference call with board members shortly after they nominated him. “State is a great institution with so much potential.”

State has been looking for a new president since the faculty voted no confidence in Carter’s leadership and Carter announced he would retire. (Charleston Daily Mail)

According to the Daily Mail, Dr. Hemphill was the overwhelming choice of students and faculty.[/mpoverlay]

West Virginia State Boosts Enrollment, Retention and Graduation Rate

[mpoverlay]Trustees at West Virginia State University today announced increases in the university’s graduation rate, enrollment and retention rates. The Charleston Gazette reports that all statistics saw an increase of at least one percent, and play a big role in the university finishing its fiscal year with a surplus exceeding $500K.

“This is the first time we’ve been able to announce an increase, folks,” said Larry Rowe, chairman of the WVSU Board of Governors. “Our graduation rate is up. Our headcount enrollment is up. Our retention rate is up. Our budget is balanced. This is a material change.” (The Charleston Gazette)[/mpoverlay]

Mississippi Valley President Donna Oliver Headlines Finalists for West Va. State Post

[mpoverlay]West Virginia State University today announced three finalists for its presidential vacancy. All of from outside of the West Virginia system of higher education, and only one – Mississippi Valley State University President Donna Oliver, is from another HBCU.

After a four-month national search, members of the WVSU presidential search committee whittled down the candidates to Brian O’Harold Hemphill, vice president for student affairs at Northern Illinois University, Alicia L. Jackson, dean of the school of business at Susquehanna University in Pennsylvania, and Donna H. Oliver, president of Mississippi Valley State University.

“It’s been a long process and this is an excellent array of candidates,” said Larry Rowe, chairman of West Virginia State’s Board of Governors. “I am very pleased with the level of education and experience of the final candidates and especially their enthusiasm for the university’s mission.” (Charleston Gazette)[/mpoverlay]
