Tennessee State Celebrates Centennial in Grand Fashion
Alumni, students and neighbors of Tennessee State University yesterday celebrated the school’s 100th anniversary. The event drew legislators and media alike in honor of the founding of the state’s only public HBCU.
On Tuesday, 99-year-old Ivanetta Davis attended a birthday party decked out in her pearls and a royal blue blouse. Although her own 100th birthday arrives in just a few weeks, Davis was celebrating another milestone — the 100th birthday of Tennessee State University.
“I hope it’s around 100 years more,” said Davis, whose husband, Walter S. Davis, was the second president at the school in the early 1900s.
