Reports out of Winston-Salem State University have been confirmed that athletic director Dr. Percy “Chico” Caldwell has been fired.
Caldwell had been slated to appear as a guest HBCU Sports Talk Radio in the coming weeks to discuss the headlines regarding the Rams’ turbulent transition to Division I. Under Caldwell’s direction, the Winston-Salem State athletic program begun the transition from Division II CIAA to Division I MEAC.
The official statement from WSSU Chancellor Donald Reaves:
“A stated goal in my short tenure as chancellor is to implement a talent strategy that has the right people in the right position at the right time. The University, including its athletic program is at a critical transition point where fresh ideas and approaches are needed, and in keeping with my commitment to the talent strategy, I believe that the athletic program and our student-athletes will benefit from new leadership,” said Reaves. Reaves added that he wished Chico Caldwell all the best in his next career endeavor.
The firing occurs just weeks after a published report in the Winston-Salem Journal documented specific shortcomings in athletic fundraising efforts at Winston-Salem State; efforts that Caldwell acknowledged fell well short of anticipated support.
Caldwell will be replaced by associate athletic director Tonia Walker. Stay tuned for more info.
