Xavier University of Louisiana recently announced a partnership with the Chicago School of Professional Psychology to launch a doctoral program in clinical psychology. The program, which will admit its first students in fall 2014 pending approval from the Louisiana Board of Regents, will be the first of its kind in the state of Louisiana, and the first of its kind at a historically Black college or university.
The XULA PsyD will be a five-year program training professionals in mental and behavioral health professions. Several Xavier graduates have enter the Chicago School PsyD program over the last few years, and according to XULA President Norman Francis, the partnership builds upon existing relationships in benefit to New Orleans and its pressing mental health care needs.
“It is no secret that the mental health service needs in this region, as well as throughout this country, are great,” said Dr. Francis. “Through this doctoral program in Clinical Psychology, we hope to address some of those needs by providing new, young professionals with the finest undergraduate and graduate psychology training experience possible right here in New Orleans.”
